Dayton Company Advertising Scrapbooks, 1904-1968 170 Linear Feet — 509 Items

The Dayton Company, founded in 1902 in Minneapolis, Minn., was the predecessor firm to the Target Corporation, one of the largest retail chains in the United States. The Dayton Company Advertising Scrapbooks collection spans the years 1904 through 1968 and consist of 509 bound scrapbooks of newspaper advertisements, fliers and circulars for the Dayton department store chain in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. and Rochester, N.Y., as well for several of Dayton's competitors, affiliates and subsidiary department and discount stores, including B. Dalton Bookseller, the J.B. Hudson and L.S. Donaldson stores.

The Dayton Company Advertising Scrapbooks collection spans the years 1904 through 1968 and consist of 509 bound scrapbooks of newspaper advertisements, fliers and circulars for the Dayton department store chain (the predecessor entity of the Target discount chain) in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. and Rochester, N.Y., as well for several of Dayton's competitors, affiliates and subsidiary department and discount stores, including B. Dalton Bookseller, the J.B. Hudson and L.S. Donaldson stores.

The collection is organized into the categories of Affiliate and Subsidiary Stores advertising and Dayton Company advertising, therein alphabetically by store name, within which the volumes are arranged in roughly chronological order.

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The Media Resources and Research Department was responsible for media research and media planning support activities within JWT's Chicago Office. The JWT Media Resources and Research Department Records spans the years 1959-2000 and primarily includes proprietary research reports on a wide variety of topics relevant to media planning, usage and evaluation. In addition, the collection includes clippings, departmental administrative files, a U-matic videocassette; and writings and speeches of key departmental executives. Topics include general media planning and effectiveness research; studies on newspapers, magazines and other print media; broadcast and cable television viewing and television commercials; outdoor advertising research; radio advertising; video and VCR usage research; demographic research, especially on media usage among women, young people, and African Americans; and international media studies.
