Burr L. Robbins papers, 1936-1975 and undated 2.1 Linear Feet — 1650 Items

Burr Lamberton Robbins was president of the General Outdoor Advertising Company (GOA). The Burr L. Robbins Papers span the years 1936-1975, and chiefly consist of three scrapbooks containing photographs, clippings, periodicals, memorabilia, and promotional materials. The majority of clippings are from advertising industry publications and Chicago newspapers. The loose materials section also includes administrative records. The collection primarily documents Robbins' career in outdoor advertising with the General Outdoor Advertising Company (GOA), and his involvement with professional advertising organizations, particularly the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA). Professional and outdoor advertising themes in the scrapbooks include Robbins' career advancement; his public speaking engagements on the role of advertising agencies in America; professional meetings and conferences; the history of GOA; outdoor advertising history; tension between citizens' groups and outdoor advertisers over billboard zoning; and legal decisions. The scrapbooks also touch on topics of personal interest to Robbins, including news about the Delevan Lake Improvement Association; Robbinswood Farm sheep; and family events. Photographs in the scrapbooks are primarily of professional meetings or conferences, or publicity events. Loose materials include items that were once part of the scrapbooks, and separate items. This section includes a notebook of 1942 photographs and papers about the 13th National Contest and Exhibit of Outdoor Advertising Art. Photographs of the three prizewinning posters, created by John DeLooy, Andrew Loomis, and Albert Staehle, are included in this notebook. Also in this section is a spiral-bound GOA publication, Image with Words, that documents a 1963 Chevrolet electric outdoor advertising campaign.

The JWT Account Files spans the years 1885-2007, with the bulk of materials covering 1920-1995. It is an artificially-created collection of information about client accounts held by the JWT and provides information about JWT's management of its advertising campaigns. This collection (94-110) (27,000 items, 50 linear feet, dated 1908-1989) consists mostly of vertical files, including office newsletters, speeches and writings, publications, training and planning documents from Chicago and other JWT offices. There are also 78 reels of microfilm of Chicago office ads prior to 1970, as well as significant collections of proof files especially pertaining to major clients like Kraft, Quaker Oats, and Schlitz. In addition, the collection holds several hundred "Aber Reports" dating between 1950-1971, which were market research summations of various product categories. A container list for this accession follows below.

Subsequent additions (96-169, 99-130, 99-239) (8514 items; dated 1970-1998) contain an item-level index to the massive library of research reports maintained by JWT's Chicago Office. Materials are arranged in alphabetical order; the largest alphabetical run is by company name. There are also cards for "X" and "AV" reports, general research reports, and an index to JWT People Profiles. Also included are printed proceedings from international symposia on magazine readership research for 1981, 1983, 1985, 1988, and 1991, including copies of some of the previously unpublished papers and related printed material (1998). These materials reveal the lengths to which advertisers go to gain insight into consumer thinking. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising and Marketing History. Addition (01-110) (70 items, .2 lin. ft.; dated [1980s]) consists of about 70 color slides depicting people, events, and locations within the company's Chicago offices.

Addition (02-0188) (397 items, 8.7 linear feet; dated 1980-2000 and undated) comprises primarily information on and examples of Thompson Total Branding (TTB), including in the US, England, Jamaica, and Asia. TTB began in 1996 and is JWT's method for addressing client marketing needs. Also includes copies of earlier methodologies, the T-Plan and Thompson Way; employee manuals; training material; J. Walter University intern/trainee manual (2000); information about the Lintas, McCann-Erickson, and Ogilvy and Mather agencies; material from JWT's World Partners Council meetings (Italy, 1995; Mexico, 1997) and marketing seminars held in the agency's Asia-Pacific region; six 3/4" U-matic SP and 11 VHS videocassettes, mainly of presentations and training material (1980s-1990s); 1 audiocassette; 47 color slides; and 208 electronic documents on 2 CD-ROMs. A container list for this accession follows below.

Several accessions of the JWT Chicago Office Records were completely or partially deaccessioned at the request of the JWT Chicago and returned to the JWT Record Center. These involved proprietary research in which the clients still retained an interest. The work of the J. Walter Thompson Company Radio-Television Department, primarily in television, is chiefly documented in the Radio-Television Series. When he joined the company, Seymour's first objective was to reorganize its radio and television operations into a single Radio-Television Department because television had emerged as the leading media in the United States in the 1950s. The process of reorganization and overall administration of the Radio-Television Department is documented throughout the Radio-Television Department Series (Office Files and Thompson Company Offices). Aspects of administration documented include: the roles of company unit heads, such as the group heads or domestic office heads; relationships among the various units; operations of review boards; new business development; client relationships; and budgets. The New York office and other domestic offices, especially the Hollywood, Chicago, and Detroit offices, were key corporate links in television-related advertising. The New York office's radio and television activities are documented throughout Radio-Television Department Series; the Thompson Company Offices Subseries primarily documents the radio and television work of other domestic offices, but it includes a small amount of information about the New York office's operations. There is additional documentation for the Radio-Television Department in the Corporate Administration Series (Office Files).

Specific television programs and the scheduling of client advertising are documented in the Radio-Television Department Series (Programming), but radio programming is minimally represented. Availabilities and the Show Files are bound compilations of documents which provide information about programs available for J. Walter Thompson Company clients to sponsor. There are synopses of shows, which usually include descriptions of actors, directors, and producers, and scripts of various lengths. The Talent Showcase files appear to serve a similar function to those of the Availabilities and Show Files. More information on program availabilities for specific networks is in the Radio-Television Department Series (Networks). Screening reports, which are synopses of programs viewed by company staff, are scattered throughout the Availabilities and the Show Files binders, but the majority of the screening reports are found in the Radio-Television Department Series (Thompson Company Offices), especially for the Chicago, Hollywood, and New York offices. Some files for specific programs that were sponsored by company clients are in the Clients Series.

There is much overlap between the Corporate Administration Series and the Radio-Television Department Series in that both series contain information on the J. Walter Thompson Company's role in television advertising. The Radio-Television Department Series contains material on this topic from 1955, when Seymour was the director of this department, to 1967, during which time Seymour was also involved in company-wide management. The Corporate Administration Series also includes material related to the Radio-Television Department.

Not only does the collection document television advertising, it also pertains to Seymour's account management of J. Walter Thompson Company clients. In fact the Clients Series, which documents this activity, comprises almost one-half of the collection. This series particularly concerns advertising strategies, billings, the development of new business, and negotiations with clients. It also documents the conceptualization and production of television shows and motion pictures that were sponsored by individual clients. The call reports are records of telephone or personal contacts with clients and include information on many aspects of JWT-client relationships. Programs sponsored by the Eastman Kodak, Ford Motor, Kraft Food, Lever Brothers, and Liggett and Myers Tobacco companies are especially well described. Documentation for client accounts is also in the Review Board files of the Corporate Administration Series (Office Files) and scattered throughout the Radio-Television Department Series (Programming).

In addition to client activity, the collection reflects the corporate business of the company, especially as conducted through the New York office, in the Corporate Administration Series (Correspondence). In particular the Reading Files and the Norman H. Strouse correspondence pertain to this corporate activity. The series also includes general correspondence and topical files that are peripherally related to company operations. Strouse's letters concern corporate administration and management at the level of the President, and reflect the information exchanges and cooperation among the company's executive officers. The Strouse files span the period in which Seymour was elected to the Executive Committee and continue through his election to the Presidency of the company, succeeding Strouse. As Chairman of the Executive Committee, Seymour was responsible for all of the company's domestic operations. The Executive Committee files in the Corporate Administration Series (Office Files), include monthly reports for "New Projects" and include client names, the product or services involved, the nature of the project, and costs.

The Corporate Administration Series (Thompson Company Offices) also documents organizational issues in domestic offices other than the New York office. The establishment of the Chicago Office's review boards is documented in the subseries. The reports in the Corporate Administration Series (Reports), reflect research and concerns about internal J. Walter Thompson Company operations as well as client and public relations issues.

In the late 1930s through 1950, before Seymour joined the J. Walter Thompson Company, he developed relationships with radio and television celebrities, client-sponsors of programs, network and studio personnel, and advertising executives. These relationships continued in Seymour's work as an advertising executive in Young and Rubicam and the J. Walter Thompson Company. The congratulatory correspondence, mostly responses to Seymour's promotions, in the Radio-Television Series, the Corporate Administration Series, and the Miscellaneous Series documents these relationships. The invitations to professional and social events in the Corporate Administration Series (Correspondence) reflect the business of the corporate world beyond the J. Walter Thompson Company.

The Papers of Granger Tripp span the years 1958-1984. They chiefly consist of presentations and speeches, but also include correspondence, memoranda, publications, and clippings, as well as a manuscript score for the Kodak song "The Times of Your Life," photographs, and audiovisual material.

The collection mainly reflects Granger Tripp's role as creative supervisor directing the creative work at the J. Walter Thompson Company between 1966 and 1984. It document's the contents and strategies of creative advertisement for the Eastman Kodak Company, as well as advertisement strategy and philosophy of the J. Walter Thompson Company in general. In addition to writings by Granger Tripp, the collection contains various writings, correspondence and memoranda of other members of the J. Walter Thompson Company creative team, including Jeremy Bullmore, Burt Manning, Douglass C. Harvey, Sonja Suspeh, Don Johnston and Joel Baumwoll.

Covering material that is client-specific as well as general in nature, the Granger Tripp collection consists of one large series referring explicitly to the collaboration between JWT and the Eastman Kodak Company and three additional series referring to the creative work of JWT in general. The Eastman Kodak Series documents the development, execution and public reaction to various creative advertising campaigns developed by the J. Walter Thompson Company for the Eastman Kodak Company. A Speeches And Writings Series refers to the company's strategies and philosophy in general. A small Publication Series contains publications on commercials for Eastman Kodak as well as advertising in general. An Audiovisual Series documents Granger Tripp's late affiliation with the Ford Motor Company. It consists of one u-matic video tape on the development of the Ford Taurus, 1986.

The Information Center Records span the years from the 1890s to 1987 with the bulk dating from the 1940s to 1987. Reports, memoranda, clippings, financial papers, and printed materials that relate to specific J. Walter Thompson Company accounts and offices and to advertising strategies comprise the majority of the collection and are found in the Vertical Files Series and Communications Committee Reports Series. The Information Center Records provide information about a wide variety of J. Walter Thompson accounts, specific details about its operation of domestic and international offices, and an in-depth view of how specific products were evaluated and promoted. The history of the J. Walter Thompson Company, the organization of multinational advertising agencies, and advertising research and marketing are also represented in this collection.

Particularly highlighted in the Vertical Files Series is information about the T-plan and T-square, which documents the foundation upon which the J. Walter Thompson Company sought to market its clients' products. Knowledge about how particular products were studied and marketed are represented by product histories and case studies in the Vertical files Series. Typical information about a product includes its history, government standards, advertising and sales history, advertising investment sales records, packaging and labeling, consumer research, and surveys relating to the product.

Marketing research studies and media research reports are common types of data found in the J. Walter Thompson domestic and international office records. For example, New York office files contain reports titled "Advertising to Women" and "Advertising and Spanish Speaking Americans." The United Kingdom Files contain a report about the interests of children from four to twelve. While records relating to employees are primarily located in the New York Office files, the Chicago Office files include an Employee Attitude Survey (1969) completed by Elrick and Lavidge, a marketing research company. The domestic and international office files referred to above are located in the Vertical Files Series.

English translations of foreign-language advertisements are often provided by JWT's Asian and Pacific Offices. European and Latin American Offices provided translations far less frequently. Spanish-language advertisements produced by JWT offices in the United States, intended for the domestic Spanish-speaking population as well as for Latin America, may be found in the Domestic Advertisements Collection.

The collection is organized into the following geographical series: Africa, Asia/Pacific, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. The multinational series are arranged alphabetically by country. For countries with multiple offices, the folders are arranged alphabetically by the office of origin. When it has been determined that more than one office within a country has been responsible for a client, the advertisements for that client are housed at the beginning of the country’s collection in a "Multiple Office" group, listed alphabetically by product and the office involved as applicable (for exception, see below).

Advertisements are arranged according to the parent company of the product being marketed (i.e. Miracle Whip, Philadelphia cream cheese, Miracoli pasta and tomato sauce, and various salad dressings are all filed together under Kraft, within a given country). Because of corporate buyouts and name changes, it may be useful to search for a product under an older or more recent parent company (for example, Standard Brands and Nabisco, or Unilever and Brooke Bond Oxo). In some cases, the parent company may not be as well known as the brand name (such as Reckitt and Colman, parent company of Gerber Baby Foods), or could not be determined, so some flexibility in searching for products and companies is recommended.

The collection of advertisements from the Montreal Office is an exception to some of the notes and guidelines above. With 28 boxes of advertisements in French and English spanning 1921 to the 1990s, the Montreal Office Subseries is almost as large as the remainder of the entire collection. To maintain the integrity of these holdings, all advertisements from JWT/Montreal are housed together in the Montreal Office Subseries, even when Toronto and/or Vancouver also produced advertisements for the same client (for example, Labatts).

In addition, a small collection of international advertisements, mounted on foamboard for display purposes, is itemized at the end of this finding aid under the heading Mounted Advertisements.
