Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936. The Consumer Reports Advocacy records collection assembles materials relating to Consumer Reports' efforts at influencing public policy and addressing a variety of social issues. Materials originated at Consumer Reports main headquarters as well as at regional offices (Southwest Region, West Coast, Washington) more closely focused on advocacy activities. Materials include correspondence, press and publicity releases, clippings, research reports, policy papers, transcripts of testimony given before government and institutional agencies and committees, and other printed material. Social issues represented include antitrust investigations, automobile safety and rollover standards, child car seats, consumer credit, dairy products and food safety, household appliance safety, housing, insurance, lead poisoning, medical care, manufactured and mobile homes, mortgage bank practices, moving industry, pesticides, poverty, product liability, school lunch programs, steel and petroleum industry actions, telecommunications, and toy safety. The term "non-proprietary" is JWT's term for research prepared or collected by the company but not on behalf of specific clients. The collection includes market and consumer research reports arranged alphabetically by subject. A small number of items represent JWT research done, but most were created by market research firms (e.g., Yankelovich, Elmo Roper and Associates), cable TV stations (e.g., MTV Networks), or magazines (e.g., Seventeen, Good Housekeeping), and others. Topics include consumer demographic analyses for the United States, especially of food and beverage products and restaurant services. Marketing to women is a major subject; there is also information on marketing to men, baby boomers, teens, and children. Acquired as part of the John W. The Popsicle was patented in 1923 by Frank Epperson, and sold to the Joe Lowe Company in 1925. Collection contains large and small format printed poster advertisements of Popsicle brand's line of frozen dessert products between 1951 and 1958, and documents Popsicle's marketing efforts during the last decade that the brand was owned by the Joe Lowe Company, prior to its purchase by Consolidated Foods (the brand is currently owned by Unilever). The posters depict promotional tie-ins with circuses as well as the Walt Disney Company; coupon offers; gift incentives for saving product wrappers; contests; and efforts to target children as consumers. Also includes memoranda sent to Popsicle salesmen during 1957-1958.

Small format posters were grouped by year and arranged chronologically. Memoranda were boxed separately and organized by type of material and year and arranged alphabetically.
