Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The JWT Account Files spans the years 1885-2007, with the bulk of materials covering 1920-1995. It is an artificially-created collection of information about client accounts held by the JWT and provides information about JWT's management of its advertising campaigns. Additionally, the files document deliberations about such topics as media selection; markets and marketing; and target audience for individual advertising campaigns. Grisman held a number of positions during his career with JWT, and rose to become Creative Director of the New York Office and an Executive Vice President. A prolific writer, Grisman produced numerous short stories, three published novels, and speeches for other JWT executives. The Arnold Grisman Papers span the years 1934-1997, with the bulk of materials spanning 1969-1987, and includes correspondence, speeches, presentations, memoranda, manuscripts, photographs, videocassettes and publications that document Grisman's work on a number of projects. The Photographs Series includes transparencies, prints, and negatives of JWT's U.S. and European staff. The Audiovisual Materials Series consists of 5 videotapes that accompanied Mr. Grisman's major presentations.

Bertram Metter worked for over thirty years as an advertising and marketing executive, most notably as a copywriter, creative director, and Vice Chairman at J. Walter Thompson USA (JWT). In in early years at JWT, Metter worked as a direct response specialist for the Ford Motor Company direct marketing operation. He also served as a primary on the Ford account, during which time he directed print and television promotion for Ford and played a key role in the launching of several new car models. The Bertram Metter Papers span 1908 to 2000, with the bulk of the collection dating 1953 through the late 1980s. The Professional Files Series contains JWT office (non-client) files, memoranda, and publications; industry publications and press clippings; overviews of Metter's professional biography; and limited files on Metter's consulting work for Ross Roy Advertising. The Writings Series contains Metter's writings on the advertising industry; bulk of series is composed of an unpublished book manuscript entitled "Breaking the Rules at J. Walter Thompson," comprised primarily of chapter drafts and research. The Ford Series, the largest series in the collection, includes materials relating to the launch and promotion of new models (Escort, Maverick, Mustang, Olympic, Pinto, Thunderbird, and Torino); marketing research and strategic reports; Ford direct mail materials and newsletters; television commercial scripts and storyboards; advertisement clippings and headlines; reproduction prints of early photographs of the Model T from the Ford Archives, Henry Ford Museum; photostats promoting the Ford Erika; and photocopies of sheet music of Ford songs from the early twentieth century. The Other Clients Series includes materials relating to general marketing research; new business acquisition; and promotional campaigns for clients other than Ford, including Firestone, Liggett & Myers, and Pepsi-Cola (Mexico). Large-format materials have been removed from their original series location and relocated to Oversize Materials.

The Personal Files Series includes newspaper and periodical clippings, as well as personal correspondence.

The Audiovisual Materials Series consists of promotional works and interviews by Johnston during his tenure with JWT.

The collection includes media plans, schedules, budgets, invoices, market research, proofs, tear sheets, photographs, conference call reports, memoranda and correspondence, and proposals related to the advertising campaigns of various JWT clients. The General Files include JWT directories, market research, office memoranda and forms, and correspondence relating to Mark Schoenfeld, Media Director at JWT Entertainment Group. Broadway files include media plans relating to the musicals Mr. Lincoln, Really Rosie, Snow White, Vaudeville Show, among others. The files on sightseeing cruise tours, Freirich Meats, the New York City Opera, Cable Shop and PIAF/Screenvision include advertising proofs, tear sheets, television and radio advertising schedules, and media plans. The Footwear files include proposals, advertising copy, proofs, media plans and market research for Covergirl and Genesco's Charm Step and Easy Street lines of shoes. Samsonite, the largest category of files in the collection, includes several booklets of research findings on the 1980s luggage market, marketing proposals and recommendations, and advertising tracking studies. The Outdoor Advertising files includes photographs, market research and correspondence related to billboard, bus and bus shelter advertising of Broadway musicals in New York City. Oversize Materials consist of large-format items removed from other series and housed separately.

Many of the marketing proposals and market research findings arrived in binders labeled with a title sheet or subject headings. Items were removed from binders, and original titles were used. Several sections were removed from their respective series into a separate oversize box.

The collection primarily consists of correspondence, administrative forms, presentations, speeches, meeting files, proofs, and financial reports, with extensive records from the Frankfurt Office. The collection also includes agency slide presentations, tear sheets, as well as photographs and other memorabilia of advertising events. Restrictions on Access: Files relating to personnel matters of JWT employees are closed to research for 40 years from the date of termination of employment, or 25 years from the date of the employee's death if termination date is unknown. In addition, original audiovisual materials are closed to research until use copies can be made.

Includes a set of essays commissioned for an Alcan Corporation advertising campaign written by public leaders U Thant, Edward J. Louge, and Columbus O'Donnell Iselin. The essays, written for magazine publication, shared the common theme of major challenges that affect humanity.
