International Monitor Institute records, 1986-2006 530 Linear Feet — Approximately 10,100 Items

The non-profit agency International Monitor Institute (IMI) operated between 1993 and 2003, primarily to assist international war-crimes tribunals by collecting, indexing and organizing visual evidence of violations of international human rights law. The International Monitor Institute Records span the dates 1986-2006, and primarily comprise audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations around the world. Countries represented include: Burma (Myanmar), Bosnia and Hercegovina, Cambodia, Kuwait, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Thailand. Includes master and use copies of approximately 6000 videocassettes and 100 audio tapes and audiocassettes. The video and audio material is indexed by an extensive database developed by IMI which includes keywords, air dates, segment producer, segment title, and in some cases, transcripts and stills from the video. There are also many photographs and slides taken in the same regions, depicting destruction in areas of conflict, forced labor, refugees and refugee camps, and protests. The majority of the photos were taken on the Burma/Thai border, in Bosnia and Hercegovina, and refugee camps in Rwanda. Finally, there are extensive organizational records, including an extensive database of the audiovisual components. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive.

The International Monitor Institute Records span the dates 1986-2006, and primarily consist of audiovisual materials related to IMI's documentation of contemporary conflicts and human rights violations around the world. Countries represented include: Burma (Myanmar), Bosnia and Hercegovina, Cambodia, Kuwait, Iraq, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Thailand. Includes master and use copies of approximately 6000 videocassettes and 100 audio tapes and audiocassettes. The video and audio material is indexed by an extensive database developed by IMI which includes keywords, air dates, segment producer, segment title, and in some cases, transcripts and stills from the video. There are also six boxes of photographs and slides taken in the same regions, depicting destruction in areas of conflict, forced labor, refugees and refugee camps, and protests. The majority of the photographs, almost all color snapshots, were taken on the Burma/Thai border, in Bosnia and Hercegovina, and refugee camps in Rwanda. One set of seven folders are images taken by staff of the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children (now known as the Women's Refugee Commission). There are other images that come from United Nations organizations, including the International Refugee Commission. Finally, organizational records from the offices of IMI comprise a significant amount of the materail in this collection, including an extensive database of the audiovisual components and transcripts from war crimes tribunals.

Addition (2007-0070) (approx. 4000 items, 120 linear ft.; dated 1990-2002) contains master and use copies of videocassettes related to human rights violations around the world.

Talmage Farlow Documentary Film collection, 1979-2011 77 Linear Feet — circa 8000 Items

Filmmaker Lorenzo DeStefano directed and produced a documentary on jazz guitarist Talmage Farlow (1921-1998) titled Talmage Farlow (Productions A-Propos, 1981). The collection contains audio, moving image, and paper materials created and compiled by DeStefano during the production and distribution of the documentary and its related audio recordings.

The Talmage Farlow Documentary Film Collection consists of materials created and compiled by filmmaker Lorenzo DeStefano during the making of the film Talmage Farlow and several related audio recordings. The majority of the materials are in various audio and moving image formats, including 16mm and 35mm film, Hi8, Betacam SP, VHS, DVD, 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch open reel audio tape, audiocassette, and CD. These are located in the Audio and Moving Image Materials Series. The Paper Files Series includes materials maintained by DeStefano on the production, distribution, and marketing of the documentary and its related audio recordings.

Collection consists primarily of television commercials, although it includes some radio commercials, which were entered for Mobius awards presented in 1971-1999. Most of the collection is divided into two main series, North America and International. Commercials are judged by product type/category as well as budget size. Also included are brochures and press releases which describe the award process ca. 1970s-1990s (98-156 box 68). There are compilation tapes documenting the award-winning entries for 1990-1997 (98-156 box 69). (Accessions 1997-0101: 12,237 items, 850.5 linear feet, dated 1984-1991, undated; 1998-0156: 1500 items, 105 linear feet, dated 1971-1997; 1999-0152: 1200 items, 112.5 linear feet, dated 1997-1998). The addition (1999-0440) (1100 items, 117 linear feet; dated 1998) consists entirely of videotaped television commercial entries for Mobius awards presented in 1999; the commercials aired in 1998. The collection is divided into two main series: North American and International. The tapes are then ordered according to product type/category (105 in all) ranging from automotive, children's products, commercial products, food, home care, set design, talent, and others. The entries document what ad agencies feel are their best works from the U.S. and abroad.

The addition (2001-0156) (1373 items, 88 linear feet; dated 2000) consists of 1072 videotaped television commercial entries for Mobius awards, most likely presented in 2000. The collection is divided into two main series: North American and International. In addition there are 285 cassettes and 16 reel-to-reel audiotapes containing radio advertising entries, also divided into North American and International categories. The entries document what ad agencies feel are their best works from the U.S. and abroad.

The addition (2002-0187) (816 items, 31 linear feet; dated 2001) consists of videotaped television commercial entries for the 2001 Mobius Awards. The collection is divided into two main series: North American and International. The video cassettes are mainly BetacamSP. There are also 176 audiocassettes containing radio commercials and 13 electronic documents on 7 CD-ROMs. Each entry is assigned a code that indicates the category in which it was entered in the competition.

The addition (2004-0103) (705 items; 27 linear feet; dated 2002) consists of videotaped television commercial entries for the 2002 Mobius Awards. The collection is divided into two main series: North American and International. The video cassettes are mainly VHS and BetacamSP. There are also 119 CD-ROMs. Eight audiocassettes contain radio commercials. Each entry is assigned a code that indicates the category in which it was entered in the competition.

Paul Jeffrey was a saxophonist who performed as a member of Thelonious Monk's band from 1970 to 1976. The collection contains audio recordings of Monk's concerts from the 1970s made by saxophonist Paul Jeffrey.

In March 1970, Monk hired saxophonist Paul Jeffrey to join his working band for a six-day run at the Frog and Nightgown club in Raleigh, N.C. Jeffrey continued performing and touring with Monk through 1976, when Monk ceased his public appearances. Jeffrey made personal open reel audio recordings of many of the concerts, and fourteen of the surviving reels comprise this collection.

C. Dayton Bud Titsworth was an executive at Lord, Geller, Federico, Einstein, a subsidiary of the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) advertising agency, in the 1970s and 1980s, before starting his own agency. The Bud Titsworth Commercials collection span the years 1968-1991 and consist of audio tapes, videocassettes and 16mm films of radio spots and television commercials on which Titsworth worked. Clients represented include Canada Dry, IBM, STP and Warner-Lambert. Announcers for radio spots include sportscaster Howard Cosell. Acquired as part of the John W. The Bud Titsworth Commercials collection span the years 1968-1991 and consist of audio tapes, videocassettes and 16mm films of radio spots and television commercials on which Titsworth worked. Clients represented include Canada Dry, IBM, STP and Warner-Lambert. Announcers for radio spots include sportscaster Howard Cosell.

Irving Sonn papers, 1963-1977 and undated 3.25 Linear Feet — 2000 Items

Irving Sonn was a copy writer for several advertising agencies including: Ted Bates & Co.; Ogilvy & Mather; Compton Advertising, Inc.; and Needham, Harper & Steers. The Irving Sonn Papers span the years 1963-1977 and contain general correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and presentation slides that primarily document the periods of Sonn's employment at Ted Bates & Co. and Needham, Harper & Steers. Also includes recordings of advertising spots and jingles in a variety of formats, including audiotape and cassettes; VHS and Umatic videocassettes; and 16mm film. Clients include: Burger King; Kodak; Kentucky Fried Chicken; and Toyota. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Audiovisual Materials, 1956-2018 and undated, bulk 1950-2018 100 Linear Feet — 1,337 analogue and digital audiovisual resources

Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel is an advocate for the arts, interviewer, documentarian, teacher, political organizer, and resident of New York City. The Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Audiovisual Collection is primarily comprised of audio and video recordings of programs and interviews produced by Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel for television and print, centering on the arts, architecture, and historic preservation, particularly in New York, from the mid-1970s to the present.

Spanning 1956 to 2018, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1976 to 2018, the Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Audiovisual Collection documents the programs produced by a pioneering advocate for art, architecture, historical preservation, and public policy. The collection is comprised of over 1,300 items, including analogue and digital audio and video resources, stemming from Diamonstein-Spielvogel's prolific output of books, educational programming, and interviews, as well as her work in historic preservation. Two hundred programs, including television interviews with notable artists, designers, and architects, and presentations by the Historic Landmarks Preservation Center, have been digitized by Duke University Libraries and are available on the Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Video Archive on YouTube. Topics covered by the materials in this collection include broad categories such as art and architecture in the 20th century; historic preservation and the protection of cultural property; media and society; social conditions; and women's rights. Where resources are available on YouTube, links have been provided to the specific video. Audio resources are available through the Duke Digital Repository on request. While all master recordings are represented in this guide, the collection contains both copies of master recordings and elements that went in to creating the master recordings. The Wells Rich Greene, Inc. (WRG) advertising agency was founded in 1966 by Mary Wells, Richard Rich, and Stewart Greene, who were associates at Jack Tinker and Partners agency. Until its demise in 1998, WRG was ranked as one of the top 15 advertising agencies in the United States. The Wells Rich Greene, Inc.
