Yusuf Salim collection, circa 1982-1987 and undated

Yusuf Salim (1929-2008) was a jazz musician and composer who began his career in Baltimore in the 1940s. He moved to Durham, North Carolina in the 1970s where he taught jazz workshops through the Salaam Cultural Center and hosted a series on WUNC-TV. The collection contains manuscripts of 36 lead sheets for Salim's jazz compositions, a piece of prose by Salim, and a photocopy of an article about him from the Raleigh News and Observer.

The Yusuf Salim Collection (chiefly undated, but some dated between 1982 and 1987) has as its focal point manuscripts of 36 lead sheets for Salim's jazz compositions. One additional folder contains a piece of writing by Salim and a photocopy of an article on him from the Raleigh News and Observer from 1987. Acquired as part of the Jazz Archive at Duke University.

Alphabetical files of miscellaneous information about hundreds of mainly U.S. corporations, some of them domestic and many multinational. The fullest documentation tends to be for companies that are or have been JWT clients (notably Kraft, Quaker Oats, Sears, Ford, Northern Telcom, Gerber, Kellogg, Philip Morris, Oscar Mayer, Kemper, S.C. Johnson, McDonnell Douglas, Jos. Schlitz, 7-Up, and others) and several that are or were major competitors of JWT clients (e.g. AT&T, McDonald's, General Motors, among others). Files contain widely diverse formats of information including internal JWT unpublished reports and memoranda; many articles clipped from magazines (especially trade press) and newspapers; articles printed from computer databases; company publications and annual reports; historical booklets and articles; three vinyl record albums; and miscellaneous items. The richest files tend to be those for major JWT Chicago office accounts, with by far the greatest amount and diversity of information on Kraft. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History.

Richard Arthur Preston (b. 1910), a leading British Commonwealth scholar, was appointed the William K. Boyd Professor of History at Duke University in 1965. Major subjects of the collection include Canadian history, especially military history; the Department of History; and the Canadian Studies program at Duke. The 1981 Additions (A81-60) include extensive correspondence, numerous drafts and published articles and reviews, photocopies of primary sources, some research notes, and administrative papers dealing with the Duke University History Dept. The chief subjects include Canadian military affairs, general military history, military education, and Canadian Studies as a historical subdiscipline. There is a folder list for this addition that is part of the collection file.

The 1980 Additions includes printed material, correspondence, studies, reports, articles, drafts, proofs, outlines, lectures, syllabi, clippings, photos, maps, and other papers. Major subjects include Canadian history, especially military history and current military and defense concerns. The first major portion of this Addition is made up of correspondence about Preston's own research and writings of other scholars. Other materials include Preston's research notes; photocopies and typed copies of historical documents; and guides to historical collections. There are also administrative files about the History Dept. at Duke, and the Canadian Studies Program. There is a small amount of material about the alumni of the Royal Military College in Canada, where Preston taught for a number of years. Robin Chandler Lynn Duke held office or was active in a number of organizations including Population Action International, the National Abortion Rights Action League, The Packard Foundation, the Draper World Population Fund, and several major corporations. Married to Ambassador Angier B. Duke. Collection (22100 items, dated 1942-2000) contains items related to Duke's extensive involvement in abortion rights, family planning, and population studies organizations. Series within the collection include correspondence, clippings, writings, publications, miscellaneous, photographs, and subject files. A substantial amount of correspondence from Duke was written to members of the U.S. House and Senate, and was written by Duke in her capacity as National Chair of Population Action International. Chiefly correspondence, printed material, critiques of publications, bibliographies, class notes, and other papers relating to his career, publications, and affiliation with different economics associations (26,378 items, 52.7 linear feet; dated 1928-1987). Some are photocopies of Spengler's correspondence with William Richard Allen. The collection also includes manuscripts of some of his works, information concerning Duke University's administrative policies and staff, reprints of published articles relating to his career, and a charcoal portrait. (1-9-87, 88-010, 93-180, 00-213) No container lists exist for these accessions.

Addition #93-294 (34,009 items, 59.1 linear feet; dated [ca. 1896]-[ca. 1976], bulk 1914-1960) contains primarily business and Spengler and Kress family correspondence, especially between Dot and Joe ([ca. 1919]-[ca. 1976]). Also includes manuscripts for Dot's genealogical novel, Family Saga in America ([ca. 1930s]) and Joe's work, Life in America; as well as Dot's journals and diaries (1924-1939, 1969). There are Christmas cards, postcards, and newspaper clippings; photographs of family and friends, including 2 tintypes, 32 cartes-de-visite, 1 color and 91 black-and-white prints, and 76 healthy nitrate negatives; and lace knitted by Dot's grandmother.

Also includes 6 photograph albums kept by Dot, two of which contain pictures taken by her with a brownie camera in and of Piqua, OH (1914-1919). The other albums contain photographs and memorabilia depicting Dot's life as a college student at Miami University, OH (1919-1921); and two showing views of the Spengler's homes, friends, and life in Tuscon, AZ, Tampa, FL (1930-1938), and Durham, NC and Duke University (1932-1940). The latter also records the 1938 Duke University faculty baseball team.

Collection includes materials removed from two incomplete scrapbooks Carole Powell began. Materials cover 1977-1984 but are mostly undated and relate to the founding and opening of Womankind Books, and its associated distribution activities and concerts on behalf of Olivia records. Includes flyers, newspaper articles and clippings, bookmarks, newsletter articles, advertisements, a catalog, press releases and posters for concerts, along with eight glossy black-and-white photographs of the musicians. There are also materials relating to fund raising activities undertaken by the Womankind Support Project, including on behalf of the Womankind Health Center, including mock-ups, mailers, and flyers for benefits; fund raising solicitations; and announcements. There are several items related to Powell's support of the Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro campaign in 1984 and to Powell's campaign for Metropolitan County Council member at-large in 1983. There are also a few items related to Chicago's "Catch the Spirit" campaign in 1984. Collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings (local, national, and international) pertaining to abortion, the anti-abortion movement, and other women's health issues, kept by staff of the National Women's Health Organization (NWHO) and its regional clinics (WHOs) in Raleigh, N.C.; Columbus, Ga.; Wilmington, Del.; Jackson, Miss.; Fargo, N.D.; Fort Worth, Tex.; Orlando, Fla.; and Milwaukee, Wis. Also contains NWHO legal files, largely pertaining to the NOW (National Organization of Women) v. Scheidler case (1986-2003), and to RICO (the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act), which plaintiffs in the case applied to the anti-abortion movement. Regional WHO clinics were among the plaintiffs for NOW v. Scheidler, and Hill acted as a key witness. The collection also includes a small number of general office/subject files. Arranged into three categories: Clippings, General Office/Subject Files, and Legal Files. The Clippings were received in chronological groupings, and are thus described in more detail than the General Office/Subject Files and Legal Files, which are less organized.

Accessions (2008-0114 and 2009-0110) consist largely of operational and legal files from the NWHO and its regional clinics, including Raleigh, N.C.; Columbus, Ga.; Delaware; Central Florida; Fargo, N.D.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Summit (Milwaukee), Wis. Materials include facilities management files; leases and other real estate information; litigation records and lawsuits between NWHO and anti-abortion groups; police and case reports; statutes about abortion procedures; and NWHO board meeting files.

Accession (2010-0019) consists of audiovisual material: 24 VHS tapes plus 2 DVD copies (master and use) of each tape. Contents include news specials relating to NWHO and the abortion debate; also includes testimony footage, interviews, and other NWHO events.

Collection comprises material Yount gathered from socialist-feminist organizations across the United States, most likely in association with the national socialist-feminist conference for organizers held at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in July 1975.

Cookie Teer papers, 1971-2000, bulk 1983-1997

Dorothy "Cookie" Foster Teer was born on August 15, 1941 to Dorothy and Nello Teer, Jr. of Durham, N.C. After a stint in New York, she returned to Durham in the 1970s. After taking some courses at Duke Divinity School, she joined the committee that founded Triangle Hospice. In the early 1980s, Teer became an overnight radical feminist, activist, and speaker, giving over 400 slide shows around the United States on pornography, sex role stereotyping, and child pornography. A 1987 conversation led to her co-founding of Southern Sisters Bookstore, a Durham, N.C. bookstore "by, for, and about women." By the late 1980s and 1990s, Teer was heavily involved in advocacy efforts around child custody, divorce, and domestic abuse, and frequently had "mothers on the run" living in her home. With a group of other women activists and radicals, Teer founded a writing collective called Women Against Sex. Married and divorced twice, Teer had three children. After Southern Sisters Bookstore closed, Teer took a step back from activism and began working as a real estate agent. The collection dates primarily between 1983-1997, providing thorough documentation of the social, cultural, and political debates over pornography in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, with materials from both proponents and opponents of anti-pornography legislation, as well as detailed documentation of the pornography industry, and transcripts from hearings organized by the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography. The collection contains some materials related to particular feminist activists and theorists, including Nikki Craft, Catherine MacKinnon, and Andrea Dworkin. Teer's extensive subject files also contain clippings, correspondence, and printed materials pertaining to women's rights, feminists, feminist organizations and events, and social issues related to women and children such as rape, pornography, incest, prostitution, domestic violence, child custody, and child abuse. Other materials relate to her ownership of the Southern Sisters bookstore (Durham, N.C.), such as promotional materials, newsletters, events fliers, and calendars.

The materials in the Dorothy "Cookie" Teer Papers date from 1971 to 2000, with the bulk of the collection dating between 1983 and 1997. These materials include: newspaper clippings, magazines, correspondence, photographs, meeting minutes, manuscripts, notes, published books, audio and videotapes, organizational records, and court transcripts. The collection documents Teer's activism during this period, the feminist issues with which she was concerned, feminist and anti-pornography activism in and around Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C., and the activities of the organizations of which Teer was a member, including the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.) and Pornography Awareness.

This collection provides thorough documentation of the social, cultural, and political debates over pornography in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, with materials from both proponents and opponents of anti-pornography legislation, as well as detailed documentation of the pornography industry, with a focus on publications such as Playboy and Hustler. Transcripts from hearings organized by the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography supplement these materials, with testimony from all sides of the pornography debate. The collection contains some materials related to particular feminist activists and theorists, including Nikki Craft, Catherine MacKinnon, and Andrea Dworkin. Teer's extensive subject files also contain newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, and printed items pertaining to women's rights, feminists, feminist organizations and events, and social issues related to women and children such as rape, pornography, incest, prostitution, domestic violence, child custody, and child abuse. Other materials relate to her ownership of the Southern Sisters bookstore (Durham, N.C.), such as promotional materials, newsletters, events fliers, several rolodex files, rubber stamps, and calendars.

The collection is organized into four series: Subject Files, Orange County Human Relations Commission, Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, and Southern Sisters Bookstore.

The Subject Files series contains clippings and academic articles related to violence against women and children. Other materials include extensive documentation of the anti-pornography movement, the work of the Orange County Human Relations Commission, the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.), and various feminist or anti-pornography symposia. Includes files on feminist artist and activist Nikki Craft and feminist scholar and lawyer Catherine MacKinnon. Several files relate to the women's/feminist Southern Sisters Bookstore in Durham, N.C., of which Teer was a proprietor.

The Orange County Human Relations Commission series contains materials related to the Orange County Human Relations Commission and the Committee for Justice for Women of Orange County. Some materials consist of pamphlets or news clippings related to the HRC's focus areas, especially the status of women and children within the county and the state; series also contains planning for and documentation of the public hearings on the status of women and children in Orange County, N.C., organized by the Human Relations Commission and held in 1989.

The Attorney General's Commission on Pornography series contains materials related to the commission's 1985-1986 investigation into pornography. Consisting almost entirely of transcripts from public hearings on pornography, some with annotations, this series details many aspects of the U.S. pornography industry. This series also contains some materials from the 1983 Minneapolis hearings on pornography.

The Southern Sisters Bookstore series contains materials related to the feminist/women's Southern Sisters Bookstore, of which Teer was co-owner, President, and CEO. Materials include financial records, flyers, mailing lists, mission statement, bibliographies of materials related to feminist issues, as well as materials such as cards from the bookstore's Rolodex, signs, and rubber stamps. Contains some correspondence from patrons, donors, and supporters of the store.

The Baldwin Federation was an undergraduate organization which united Alspaugh, Bassett, Brown and Pegram Residence Halls on the East Campus of Duke University from around 1971 to the early 1980s. Records contain minutes, constitutions, reports, ballots, correspondence, fliers, newsletters, a survey, a pamphlet, printed materials, photographs, and clippings. Major subjects include student life at Duke University, dormitories, residence and education, college freshmen, and the Joe Baldwin festival. Materials range in date from 1971 to 1985. English.

David W. Dole is a genealogist and former broadcasting and advertising executive (Leo Burnett agency). The Industry Standard Commercial Identification (ISCI) system is a coding system used by television stations and advertisers to identify and track television commericials. The ISCI code consists of and 8-character identifier, four letters (identifying the advertiser) and four numbers (identifying the specific commercial), in the format ABCD1234. Each version of every commercial receives a unique identifier. David Dole is also the author (in the 1990s) of the Publishers Genealogical Coding Service (PGCS), used by librarians and genealogists to codify bibliographic information for obituaries. The David W. Dole ISCI Records span the years between 1969 and 2004 and document the creation and management of the Industry Standard Commercial Indentification (ISCI) system. The collection consists of press releases, correspondence, pamphlets, clippings, articles, published registers, and technical documents that pertain to the proposal, design and implementation of the ISCI system. Materials pertain to the involvement of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), including the purchase of the ISCI system from Dole by the AAAA/ANA in the 1990s, and the replacement of ISCI with a new system, Ad-Id.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Herbert Brungs was the former chairman OMG (chief operating officer) and managing director (Geschäftsführer) at JWT Frankfurt, Germany, office. The papers of Herbert Brungs span the years 1969 to 1988 and document Brungs' activities as representative to the German trade organization GWA and the as the executive in charge of employee education. The collection contains general files, client files, organizations files, and writings and speeches files. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Herbert Brungs Papers span the years 1969 to 1988, with the bulk from the 1980s. The papers document Brungs' activities as the representative to the German trade organization GWA and as the executive in charge of further education of employees and managers through seminars and classes. Specific topics documented the opening of the JWT office in Düsseldorf; the introduction of computers systems at JWT-Frankfurt; correspondence with academics interested in the advertising industry; relations with a few big clients such as CMA (agricultural industry) and Deutscher Wein (trade organization for German wine); communication with the GWA concerning the relationship between the industry and politicians; industry excellence awards; and internal and external seminars and their evaluations. The collection consists of typed and handwritten correspondence; external and internal memoranda; articles and presentations (typed or offprints) accompanied by charts and graphs; and some other printed material. Approximately 70 percent of the collection is in German. Only correspondence with foreign offices and clients as well as some of the subject material is in English.
