Collection consists of approximately 400 labels taken from packages of cheese and cheese spreads. Brands represented include Aplin & Barrett, Bel, Cow & Gate, Kraft, Libby, Plumrose, St. Ivel (Unigate, later Uniq), Swift, Surrey, Tolko, Tollose and Wilts. Cheeses originated from a variety of European countries including Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Japanese Product Labels collection, approximately 1900s-1930s

Consists of three scrapbooks containing labels for primarily beverages produced in Japan or imported for Japanese consumption. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are represented, including flavored mineral water, flavoring syrups, cider, shochu, sake, gin, cognac, and port and other wines. Imported products originated in the United States, Spain, Portugal and France. Companies represented include Asahi, Showa, Hoyoku and Good Drink. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

John Benjamin Harris is Professor Emeritus of Management and Marketing at Virginia State University. He pioneered governmental and commercial awareness of African American advertising markets and, in the 1970s, became the Director of the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise and Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Enterprise. The John Benjamin Harris Papers span the years 1955-1991 and include scholarly articles, corporate reports and proposals, product labels, 16mm film reels, and audio tapes. Materials represent Harris' academic and professional work at New York University and Virginia State University as well as his work for the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise. Topics touched on in the collection include minority business enterprises; minority markets and minorities (especially African Americans) as consumers; and African American mass media. In addition, the collection reflects Harris' work for the advertising industry with employers including Cunningham & Walsh, Inc., the Leo Burnett Company, Inc., and the Ted Bates Company. Sauer, Farrell, & Co. was a cigar manufacturing company located in Suffield, Connecticut, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Collection of ledgers, account books, order forms, and other ephemera relating to the sale and purchase of cigars by Sauer, Farrell, & Co., Cigar Manufacturers. Materials range in date from the 1870s through the early 1900s, and it is believed that the cigar company may have changed names throughout that period. The centerpiece of the collection is a specimen book of sample cigar box labels, created by the lithographers Heppenheimer & Maurer around 1878. The specimen book includes about 115 leaves, with labels affixed on each side of the leaf; the label colors range from two colors to multiple colors per label. Account books document cigar production, purchase, and sales information. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
