The final series is Oversized Materials and includes items from Edens's inauguration as president of Duke.

Administrative officers who communicated with Pye in regard to these matters include James Price, Dean of Undergraduate Education, William Griffith, Dean of Student Affairs, and President Terry Sanford.
The second series consists of subject files created during Pye's second tenure as Chancellor, 1976-1982. As Chancellor, Pye had overall responsibility for planning and budgeting at the university, and the files reflect the retrenchment and long-range planning process that occurred at Duke in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Other subjects include reports on the enrollment of North Carolina students, the admission of African-Americans, A.B. Duke Scholars from the years 1926 to 1981, financial aid and admissions, the Duke University Athletic Association (DUAA), the recruitment and admission of student-athletes, the Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics of the American Council on Education, Title IX of the Education Amendments, affirmative action, planning for the University Center (Bryan University Center), East Campus planning and residential life, the Public Safety department, black affairs, labor relations and unionization, the Nixon Library controversy, the American Dance Festival, the Marine Laboratory, and forestry, nursing, sociology, and education programs.

The files consist chiefly of information gathered in relation to long-range planning, including questionnaires, communications with members of the Long-Range Planning Committee, statistical data, and other materials.
The third series, A. Kenneth Pye Papers, 1968-1976, includes typescripts of speeches, correspondence, reports, and other material created during Pye's tenure as Dean of the School of Law, Chancellor, and University Counsel. The papers reflect matters outside of Duke University. The correspondence, spanning 1968 to 1974, includes letter from Pye's former law students and gives details about their careers and lives. Pye's responses are included. The correspondence further reflects Pye's work as an attorney and an educator, as it in part pertains to legal questions and issues. North Carolina Senator Sam Ervin and Chief Justice Warren Burger are among those who consulted with Pye on legal matters. The speeches and addresses, which are dated from 1968 to 1974, were primarily delivered at other institutions and relate to legal education and legal issues, including student demonstrations. Several subject files include reports and materials on university matters, including a public hearing on the ROTC, a 1975 report on teacher education at Duke, and reports from the Durham Urban Observatory, a joint research project between Duke, North Carolina Central University, and the city of Durham.

The collection covers Aleksandar Sedmak Vesić's working and class papers. Included is research into soil mechanics, the application of engineering principles to construction materials, and the use of explosives in excavation projects. Vesić also lectured widely and participated in a large number of conferences and committees; materials related to those activities are also represented.

The scrapbook contains photographs and article clippings from Chanticleer yearbook, calling cards, Drama Club ephemera, and event programs and memorabilia. Also includes 7th grade class photograph from January 1915 and a report card envelope from 11th grade at Black Mountain High School.
Craven attached these items in a patent "School Friendship Book" of 190 pages, published by the Reilly and Lee Co. Selected photographs and headings from Chanticleer have been pasted into the book, including campus literary societies, May Day celebration, signed letter from George Braxton Pegram (Trinity 1895). The contents range in date from 1915-1924.
The Alice M. Baldwin Papers contain materials relating to Dean Baldwin's career as an educator, historian, and administrator, especially during her tenure at Duke University. Her papers include official, personal, and professional correspondence, printed matter, photographs, clippings, and other materials concerning the development and administration of the Woman's College at Duke University, the role of women's colleges in society, and the activities of business and professional women. Correspondents include other women educators, administrators of government offices and charitable and social organizations, former students, and Duke University faculty and staff. Among the major subjects besides the Woman's College are the Southern School for Workers, Inc., North Carolina and Southern labor issues, the U.S. Navy Waves program, and the education of women in general. The collection is organized into several series. The first series, Personal, includes documents related to Baldwin's family, genealogy, and education. The second series, Correspondence, consists of materials concerning her research and publications as well as general correspondence. Major correspondents include Nora C. Chaffin, Charles C. Crittenden, Katherine E. Gilbert, Meta Glass, Orie L. Hatcher, Louise McLaren, and Belle Rankin. The series is organized chronologically.
The third series, the Alphabetical File, is the largest series of the collection, and consists of professional and personal correspondence, student papers, and the office files of Baldwin. The file is arranged alphabetically by subject. Among the organizations Baldwin had an interest in were the American Association of University Women, the Institute of Women's Professional Relations, the National Association of Deans of Women, and the North Carolina Council of Women in Education. She also served on the boards of various state and federal commissions and committees dealing with the role of women's colleges in society. Her participation in the U.S. Navy Waves program is well-documented, as is her interest in the Southern School for Workers and other progressive organizations. The fourth series is Writings, which includes final versions, drafts and notes for a number of monographs and articles. Included are extensive notes from her graduate research on New England clergy. Of particular interest in this series is a 90-page manuscript, "The Woman's College As I Remember It," Baldwin's account of her hiring as the first woman with faculty rank at Duke, and the academic challenges involved in the establishment of the Coordinate College for Women there.
The fifth series is Speeches and Addresses, and is comprised primarily of notecards used by Baldwin in making presentations to a variety of groups. The next series is Photographs, and includes photographs of a European trip and excursions to the New England shore, as well as other personal photos. The sixth series is Clippings, and includes clippings on churches, labor relations, and prohibition. The following series is Printed Materials, and consists of several bound volumes, including the "Baldwin Annual" of the Baldwin School, dedicated to Alice Mary Baldwin, and J.B. Rhine's New World of the Mind, dedicated to Baldwin by the author. The final series, Artifacts, consists of two pins given to Baldwin Delta Gamma Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa, and a key from Duke University's White Duchy.
The Allan H. Bone Papers include material related to conducting, music subjects, courses, research, and the administration and history of the Duke University Department of Music. It also includes concert programs from Duke University performances, personal correspondence, and daily planners.
Collection contains manuscripts of two of Cartter's published books: The Redistribution of Income in Postwar Britain (1955) and The Theory of Wages and Employment (1959). Items were untied and foldered for processing. It ranges in date from 1955-1959.
The collection features materials documenting the Allen Building Takeover at Duke University. The Subject Files series includes color photographs taken inside the building, announcements, flyers, publications, correspondence, handouts, reports, transcripts, and ephemera relating to Black Culture Week (Feb. 4-12, 1969), the Allen Building Takeover (Feb. 13, 1969), and items relating to student demands, statements by Provost Marcus Hobbs and by Duke President Douglas Knight, student convocations and demonstrations both in support of and against the Takeover, and later events on the Duke campus and in Durham, N.C. Photographs were taken by student participant Lynette Lewis and show the students inside the building during the Takeover; they are accompanied by the original color negatives. Also included are clippings of newspaper and magazine coverage of the Takeover from the campus paperThe Chronicle, as well as local, state, and national media.
In addition, the collection contains clippings and artwork related to anniversaries and remembrances of the Takeover. Students created artwork in this collection while participating in the 2002 Allen Building lock-in, an event commemorating 1960s activism at Duke and an opportunity for students and administrators to discuss the racial climate on campus.
The Allen Building Takeover Oral History Collection includes materials collected by Duke student Don Yannella while writing his senior thesis in 1985. The oral histories offer first-hand accounts of and reactions to the Takeover from Duke students, staff, administrators, and members of the Durham community.
The interviews were recorded on cassette tapes, and these original tapes are in Box 1. Access copies and transcripts for many of the interviews are included; listening copies are in Box 2 and transcripts are in Box 3.

The phone logbooks (1990-1992) are accounts of phone messages received by the organization, but they also acted as an information clearinghouse for the busy AQUADuke members serving as a central location to leave messages for other members providing insight into the organization's activities, concerns, and internal issues.
The All of the Above records contain programs, scripts, list of participants, a directors manual titled "Making all of the Above," and two mini DV digital videocassettes of the 2008 production. In 2019, All of the Above began including digital video files of the performances.

Minutes are in a single bound volume and begin with the first meeting of the sorority in September 1935 through April 1946; minutes discuss event planning, administrative business, and other topics.
The Alpha Phi Omega, Lambda Nu Chapter Records include minutes, reports, correspondence, administrative information, slides, photographs, audio tapes, scrapbooks, and other materials documenting the history of this service fraternity. The first series, Administrative, contains information about the membership, volunteer work, social activities, and alumni of Lambda Nu. The second series, Slides, contains slides of Lambda Nu activities from 1980 to 1997. The next series, Audio Recordings, has one audio cassette of the 1998 Senior Banquet. The fourth series, Composite Photographs, contains photographs of all Lambda Nu Members during most school years between 1986 and 2002. The Scrapbooks series contains photographs, documents, handwritten notes, and other materials assembled by Lambda Nu members. The final series, Oversize Materials, houses oversize scrapbooks.

The bulk of the records date from 1959 to 1961, and relate to planning for the second and third southeastern regional assemblies held at Duke on monetary policy in 1959, and on national goals in 1961. Correspondents include Benjamin Ratchford, Lloyd Saville, and A. Hollis Edens.
Correspondence, reports, proceedings, memoranda, and other materials of the AAUP from the period when Duke University faculty member William T. Laprade was chairman of its Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure (1937-1942, 1948-1953), and president (1942-1943). A sample of the folders shows material concerning academic freedom cases, dismissals, quality of educational support and other matters of concern to the organization's membership. Series 1 consists of correspondence relating to concerns expressed to the Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure (Committee A), along with a few reports. Series 2 is made up of the Proceedings noted below. Series 3 appears to be the correspondence files from the office of the Association's President, but there are no folder titles and no apparent order.

Duke Memorial, Inc.: Summer Study at Oxford, Self-Determined Educational Experience, In-Class Scholar Award, and the Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship; reports, correspondence, and miscellaneous material. The restricted series contains bound annual reports of the scholarship and prize committees, a sampling of student loan applications, and annual Memorial Scholar student essays. Financial papers include loan amounts and balances, assorted vouchers, corporate investment material, and several oversize items: bound ledgers, cash books, and journals.
Scrapbook contains family photos, photos of Angus McDougall's sculptures, clippings, a book jacket for George Roy Elliot's 1953 Flaming Minister: A Study of Othello as a Story of Love and Hate designed by McDougall and a 1959 letter with accompanying photographs from "Brother Tom."

Some materials relate to University matters, but most concern the study and teaching of American history, particularly the history of women in the South. Included are 24 students' reactions to the assassination of John F. Kennedy (1963), 17 student papers on the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island (1979), a "Last Lecture" by Dr. Scott ("A Modest Proposal for a Quiet Revolution," 1966), 170 students' interviews with working women (1976), and a letter by Ruth Dozier describing the work of a home demonstration agent in North Carolina from 1900-1920. All of these materials are open for research. University-related material includes the University Scholar Teacher Award (1982-1983) [restricted] and included a files on the Provost Search Committee (1982-1983) which was removed by Archives staff. Correspondence is sometimes labeled Business Correspondence and sometimes as AFS Chronological File. The topical or subject files include letters of recommendation, History Department minutes, and files relating to seminars, meetings, publishing, and professional associations. The correspondence and subject files are closed except by permission of Dr. Scott and the University Archivist. The material ranges in date from 1963-2002.
The collection consists of photographs, writings, and memorabilia from Anne-Marie Deprés Bryan's life and work as a professor of French at Duke University. Photographs span Anne-Marie Bryan's life and include images of her family, including her husband and children; the majority of the images are reproductions of originals. Writings include a copy of her textbook Fast French (published posthumously), a typed manuscript copy of a memoir in French as well as selections from a separate memoir in English. Also included are copies of some artwork created by Anne-Marie Deprés Bryan, a biography written by her daughter Yvonne Bryan Tomek, and poems about her life written by her son-in-law and former student, James Tomek.

Collection contains materials pertaining to the mission and organization of the U.S. Army Office of Ordinance Research, the forerunner of the Army Research Office-Durham (AROD). Materials include summaries of the activities of the Duke/AROD coordination office for the fiscal years 1966, 1969-1971, and a scrapbook dated 1959. The scrapbook contains photographs of Duke officials, Ordnance office chiefs, various dedication events and ceremonies, event guest lists, official luncheons, and RTP exhibit, all from 1959. The materials in the collection span the years 1957-1982.
Collection includes lists, inventories, correspondence, clippings, notes, memoranda, photographs, and other materials generated 1915-2005 and related to art and artifacts owned by Duke University, including information on the portraits of the Trustees of The Duke Endowment in the Gothic Reading Room painted by Douglas Chandor. The Arthur M. Proctor Papers include correspondence, speeches, articles, clippings, handbooks, photographs, and other materials related to Proctor's career as a teacher of teachers. Includes surveys of North Carolina schools, 1920s-1950s, and handbooks for state high schools, course materials for his work at Duke and other schools, and some files on the Duke Department of Education.
The Arthur Sperry Pearse papers include the professional papers and photographs of A. S. Pearse's scholarly career. His professional papers span the length of his academic career and include: correspondence, writings and lectures, lab notes and data, fieldwork notes, teaching materials, clippings and printed materials, many photographs and negatives, book illustrations, and glass slides. Images are of animal and plant life, but also landscapes, people, villages, and social aspects of life from about 1915-1935 in Nigeria and the Yucatán Peninsula, and from other research trip locations in South America and Southeast Asia, 1910s-1930s. Included are snapshots of fellow scientists in the laboratory and in the field. There are also early photographs and materials regarding the Marine Biology Laboratory in Beaufort, N.C. and other marine labs, as well as images of the N.C. coast and people such as fishermen. A large group of images consists of illustrations used in Pearse's textbooks, articles, and teaching lectures.
Prominent subjects throughout the collection include the establishment of and research projects at the Duke University Marine Laboratory, the promotion of forestry as a scientific discipline at Duke, Pearse's role as editor of the journal Ecological Monographs, and his research interests: marine biology, ecology, crustaceans, parasitology and parasitic diseases, microbiology and biological adaptation, and forestry.
Correspondence primarily reflects his role as editor of Ecological Monographs which includes correspondence concerning receipt of drafts for publication, recommended revisions, and future publication dates. Other prominent topics include Pearse's involvement with professional organizations, various symposiums and conferences, publications, research in Nigeria and the Yucatán, and the founding and early operations of the Duke University Marine Laboratory at Beaufort, North Carolina. Also, in 1938-1939, there is a series of correspondence between Pearse and President William Preston Few concerning lack of support for and conditions within the department and Pearse's consequent resignation as departmental chair.
Other materials include research notes, tables, and sketches; graduate student correspondence, plans of work, and dissertation abstracts; manuscripts of various publications authored by Pearse including Animal Ecology and his 1952 autobiography, Adventure: Trying to be an Ecologist; laboratory and field notebooks containing research notes and statistics from Nigeria, the Yucatan, Wisconsin, and various other research locations.
There are many photographic prints, nitrate and safety negatives, and glass-plate lecture slides, all documenting Pearse's research travels, particularly in Nigeria and the Yucatán, but also in Alabama, Florida, and coastal North Carolina, Japan, China, Burma, the Phillippines, Colombia, and Venezuela. Images include local flora, fauna, landscapes, villages, localized crafts and industries, and indigenous peoples, as well as maps, charts, tables, drawings, and photographs used in Pearse's lectures and publications.
Artifacts, memorabilia, pins, awards, textiles, and other materials, either related to or produced by Trinity College and Duke University or collected by Trinity College Historical Society or other offices and individuals as historical curiosities. Includes academic apparel from university leaders, athletic memorabilia, commemorative plates, and shoulder patches from the Armed Forces units that Duke alumni served in.
Arts and Sciences Council records include correspondence, reports, minutes, memoranda, questionnaires, and other materials documenting the activities of the A&S Council. The bulk of the materials were generated by the Curriculum Review Committee, circa 1992-1999. In 1992 Dean Richard White appointed the Curriculum Review Committee to evaluate the undergraduate curriculum. The records of the committee document its processes of studying the curriculum as well as its evaluation and recommendations. Surveys concerning the curriculum, which were completed by faculty as well as juniors and seniors are included. Curriculum issues reflected in the records include the Undergraduate Writing Course, requirements for academic majors, the division of the curriculum into six areas of knowledge, and academic advising. Copies of earlier curriculum studies, "Structure and Choice in Liberal Education" (1986) and "A Climate for Liberal Learning" (1980), are included.
The collection also features records created by several other committees, including Academic Affairs, Academic Standards, Financial Aid, Residential Life, and Senior Year.
Flyers and posters, newspaper and magazine clippings, calendars, event programs and other materials pertaining to the arts at Duke and Trinity College. The bulk dates are 1972-2000. Includes a plan of the "Woodland Stage" at Trinity College along with programs and contracts for performances at Trinity by the Ben Greet Players and the Coburn Players, circa 1910-1916.
Collection includes correspondence, financial papers, membership information, event announcements, minutes, reports, and other administrative papers. Major subjects include Duke University Woman's College and Woman's College Library, art appreciation, and faculty spouses. Materials range in date from 1950 to 1970; the bulk of the materials date from 1950 to 1959.
