The Duke Chapel fifty-bell carillon was installed in 1932 and is used to play afternoon recitals, and programs on holidays and other public occasions. Duke's carillon has been played by university carillonneurs Anton Brees and J. Samuel Hammond. The collection was created by Hammond, and contains records relating to the operations and activities of Duke Chapel carillon and ranges in date from 1929-2022. Materials include administrative records, correspondence, printed recital programs, carillon and carillonneur material, clippings, photographs, and performance recordings.

Contains material pertaining to the operation and activities of the Duke University Chapel and ranges in date from 1920-[ongoing]. The records are arranged in nine series: administrative records; carillon/carilloneur; exercise programs and bulletins; sermons; registers and logbooks; general files; ministers, committees, and subject files; The Congregation at Duke Chapel newsletter; and Director of Chapel Music.

The Administrative records contain material created and accumulated by the Chapel Development Officer as well as the records of various committees including Chapel renovation and organ. Carillon material includes program logbooks created by the University Carillonneur and a special carillon program in honor of Terry Sanford. The exercise programs series is composed of printed programs from various services and exercises held in the Chapel: Sunday Service of Worship, Elementary Service, Faculty Service, Service for Elected Officials, various recitals, and Easter, Lenten, and Christmas services. The sermons series contains transcripts of sermons performed in the Chapel by various ministers, faculty, and guests of the University including William H. Willimon, James T. Cleland, Howard C. Wilkinson, and Waldo Beach. Registers and logbooks contains oversize bound volumes documenting Chapel attendance and weddings, baptisms, and funerals held in the Chapel. General files primarily consists of reference material used by Chapel staff: informal histories, information about chapel windows and exterior sculpture, informal patron inquiries, and various printed material. Major subjects include building and grounds, organ (Flentrop and Aeolian), tower and elevator, Chapel policies, weddings, and Chapel photo albums. Also present in the collection are programs for special services held in the Chapel observing V-E and V-J Days and the Chapel's dedication ceremony in 1935.

Types of materials include correspondence, financial material, minutes, and reports. Major subjects include Duke University religious life, students, Christianity, and fellowship. Major subjects include: financial and budget plans, personal correspondence and notes of gratitude, scheduling and content of meetings, and the projects or proposed projects funded by the institution. Among the items of interest are: a volume of Duke Chapel Prayers, 1953 to 1956, selected by Barney Jones, and dedicated to Dean Herbert Herring; copies of the reports of the Duke University Religious Council, 1943/44 to 1961/62; and printed material concerning projects and causes the Church was involved with, including the Crossnore School (Crossnore, N.C.), and The American Farm School, (Thessaloniki, Greece).

The Friends of Duke Chapel was founded in 1974 to provide the means for interested persons to organize into an ongoing, supportive, participatory group to support the ministry and program of Duke Chapel. The records consist of correspondence, official letters to members, advisory board and committee minutes and reports, newsletters, and other organization publications. Materials are present from 1973 to 1999. English.

These records were produced by the Friends of Duke Chapel in the course of their activities as a support organization for the program of Duke Chapel. Materials are present from 1973 to 1999. The bulk of the records consists of correspondence, official letters to members, advisory board and committee minutes and reports, newsletters, and other organization publications. There is some material not directly produced by the Friends of Duke Chapel but mentions the organization in its publications, or deals with the history of Duke Chapel.
