Charles DeWitt Watts papers, 1917-2004 and undated 13.6 Linear Feet — Approximately 7249 Items

Pioneering African American surgeon who was chief of surgery at Lincoln Hospital, clinical professor of surgery at Duke University, founder of Lincoln Community Health Center, director of student health at North Carolina Central University, and vice president and medical director for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, all in Durham, N.C. Spanning the period of 1917 to 2004, the Charles DeWitt Watts Papers contain files related to Watts's education, family, community activities, centered in Durham, N.C., and his career as a surgeon, administrator, and trustee on several boards. There is material on the formation in 1901 of Lincoln Hospital, a medical care facility for African Americans in Durham, N.C.. and other items on the early 20th century history of Durham, but the bulk of the papers relate to the later half of the 20th century. Formats primarily consist of correspondence, reports, notes, speeches, photographs, and print materials. It is organized into the following series: Community Relations, Personal Files, Photographic Materials, and Professional Files. Material in the Medical Records Series have been separated and are currently closed to use. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Spanning the dates 1917 to 2004, the Charles DeWitt Watts Papers contain files related to Watts's education, family, community activities, centered in Durham, N.C., and his career as a surgeon, administrator, and trustee on several boards. The bulk of the material dates from 1970 to 2000. The collection primarily consists of correspondence, reports, notes, speeches, photographs, and print materials, and is organized into the following series: Community Relations, Personal Files, Photographic Materials, and Professional Files. Material containing personally-identifiable medical information in the Medical Records Series has been separated from the other professional files and is currently closed to use.

Largest in the collection is the Professional Files Series, which primarily contains administrative documents related to Watts's career as a doctor, surgeon, and medical administrator for various private practices, hospitals, boards, and professional societies. Of particular note are files related to Watt's mentor, Dr. Charles Drew, the history of Lincoln Hospital, and the establishment of the Lincoln Community Health Center in 1970. The folders in the Medical Records Series have been separated and are currently closed to use. The Community Relations Series concerns Watts's professional life outside of medicine, containing files related to his membership in churches and fraternal organizations, non-medically-related boards on which he served, his work with Durham, N.C. organizations, his interest in race relations, and honors awarded him. Also included are the papers of Constance Watts (wife), Lyda Merrick (mother-in-law), and Margaret Smith (a nurse in his office). Of special interest is a scrapbook about the Negro Braille Magazine (now the Merrick-Washington Magazine for the Blind), founded by Mrs. Merrick.

Some professional correspondence is also intermixed in the Personal Files Series, which contains papers related to Watts's family, friends, finances, education, and alumni activities. Of particular note is a transcript of Watts's oral history. Containing both professional and personal content, the Photographic Materials Series contains photographs, slides, and negatives. The bulk consists of portraits and snapshots of the Watts family. Of particular note are early photographs of Lincoln Hospital nursing students and staff members.

The Duke University Medical Center Reference Collection contains clippings, handbooks, reports, newsletters, and other printed material relating to Duke University Medical Center its departments, employees, and other related matters. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

Collection
Henry E. Rauch was an accountant, businessman, and executive who served on the Board of Trustees of Duke University. An executive and Chairman of the Board at Burlington Industries, he served on Duke's Board of Trustees from 1964-1974. He largely was responsible for the Trustee response to the Duke Vigil in 1968 and closely involved with the expansion of the Duke Medical Center from 1970-1978. The Henry E. Rauch papers include materials related to Henry Rauch's time as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees, some autobiographical notes on Henry Rauch's personal and professional life, and excerpts from Board of Trustee meeting minutes related to Henry Rauch. Much of the material related to Rauch's tenure in the Board of Trustees was gathered together as a scrapbook, and includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, reports, and typed notes on his particular role and involvement in events, such as the Duke Vigil and in the development of the Duke Medical Center.

Rauch papers include materials related to Henry Rauch's time as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees, as well as some autobiographical notes on Henry Rauch's personal and professional life. Much of the material related to Rauch's tenure in the Board of Trustees was gathered together as a scrapbook, and includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, reports, and typed notes on his particular role and involvement in events, such as the Duke Vigil and in the development of the Duke Medical Center. Also included are excerpts from Board of Trustee meeting minutes relating to Henry Rauch, often including handwritten annotations by him.

The collection is arranged into five series: Autobiographical materials, Duke Scrapbooks, Board of Trustees meeting minutes excerpts, Photographs, and Awards. Autobiographical materials include copies of typed chapters describing Henry Rauch's personal and professional life not including his involvement with Duke University. Duke Scrapbooks include materials which were gathered into scrapbooks by Henry Rauch and were disassembled prior to their transfer to the University Archives; these include materials related to Rauch's involvement in Board of Trustees committees, particularly related to the Medical Center and the Duke Vigil in 1968. Board of Trustees meeting minutes excerpts relate to the actions and contributions of Henry Rauch, and many include his handwritten annotations and explanations. Photographs and Awards both include oversized materials, many of which are mounted on boards and were removed from frames. These relate to Rauch's involvement with the Board of Trustees, the Medical Center Board of Visitors, and outside organizations.

Collection
Contains correspondence, addresses, reports, memoranda, clippings and printed material documenting Woodhall's role in the governance of the University. Topics include the student unrest of the period, such as the Allen Building takeover and Vietnam War protests, unionization of the Medical Center, the management of University-owned housing, as well as Duke Forest.

Much of the collection is made up of folders Woodhall labeled memorabilia, grouped by month, which include correspondence, copies of newsclippings, Office of Information Services releases, invitations, programs, and other materials. For each month, Woodhall wrote a brief summary of the events and activities that occurred, which sometimes includes commentary or reflection, usually succinct. Most of these events and activities are represented to some degree in the folder.

1969 folders include materials about student protests, including the Allen Building Takeover, and administrative activities around Woodhall's appointmentment as the first Chancellor in the wake of President Knight's announcement of retirement. These folders also include a large number of newsclippings from around the county related to student protests, student involvement in academia, and administrative activities at Duke and elsewhere. 1969 and 1970 folders include some materials about the retirement of Douglas Knight and the selection of Terry Sanford as President of Duke University. Materials from June 1970 on focus primarily on activities in the Medical Center, including the founding of the Davison Club, and Woodhall's professional activities as a neurosurgeon, including his attendance of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in October 1970 and naming as a Statesman of Medicine in 1971.

The bulk of the memorabilia is made up of news releases and newsclippings. Much of the original material is related to the Medical Center. A smaller portion is related to Woodhall's activities as the Special Assistant to the President and then as Chancellor Pro Tem of the University. These materials include correspondence with administrators and members of the Board of Trustees as well as letters from friends, faculty, and members of the public, and other materials.

The remainder of the collection is made up of subject files, alphabetical by topic, which also includes some correspondence, printed matter, and other materials.

Contains memoranda, correspondence, budgets, reports, agreements, financial information, organizational records and other printed matter from the Office of the Vice President for Business and Finance. Records concern Duke University, its various academic departments, organizations, and benefactors, including the Medical Center. These records were created by Vice President for Business and Finance Gerhard Henricksen (1962-1966) and his successor Charles B. Huestis (1966-1985), and provide a detailed account of the university's financial status. Major topics include the university's relationship with the Duke Endowment and Local Unions 77 and 465, Medical Center construction;, university properties, physical plant, and facilities renovations, national professional organizations, several university committees, the Board of Trustees, the Duke University Athletic Association, WDBS campus radio station, the Duke Vigil, Duke University Marine Lab, Huestis' personal interests and affiliations, and the departments of the Business and Finance Division (including Housing, Data Processing and the Computation Center, Accounting, Dining Halls, Personnel, Materials Support, Safety and Traffic, TelCom, and Utilities), and the University Architect.
