Calla Raynor began her career at Duke in the Physical Education department in 1962 and served as the women’s varsity tennis coach from 1967 to 1973. Raynor was instrumental in co-founding Duke University's women's basketball program. This collection contains correspondence, teaching materials, materials related to Ms. Raynor’s education at the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. The collection also includes sporting event materials, student athlete records, tournament materials, newspaper clippings, audiovisual materials, collegiate sports institutions and organizations for women, and other records from Raynor’s career at Duke.

This collection contains correspondence, teaching materials, materials related to Ms. Raynor’s undergraduate coursework at the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) and graduate coursework at UNC-Chapel Hill, sporting event materials, student athlete records, tournament materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other records. Materials are related to Duke University’s sports program, as well as materials from other universities and colleges. The collection includes articles and publications related to physical education instruction, primarily from outside sources. Although Raynor's teaching files are included, such as quizzes and exams, most of the published articles were authored by individuals outside of Duke University.

Sports association materials include materials from the early 1970s to the early 1980s -- these materials include records from the Division of Girls’ and Women’s Sports (DGWS), which became the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women in 1971.

Julia Rebecca Grout (1898-1984) served as Chairman of the Women's Department of Health and Physical Education at Duke University from 1924 to 1964. The Julia R. Grout Papers include correspondence, clippings, writings, printed matter, photographs, and other materials related to Grout's professional and personal interests. Topics include Grout's career and retirement; the history of physical education at Duke; comparisons of American and European physical education; physical education for women; Grout's travels to Southern Africa and Europe; and Grout's participation in the Dedication Committee of Baldwin Auditorium at Duke. English.

The Julia R. Grout Papers include correspondence, clippings, writings, printed matter, photographs, and other materials related to Grout's professional and personal interests. The papers are divided into four series. The Personal series includes Grout's resume, retirement materials, tributes to her, and documents related to her funeral. One of the retirement materials is a large bound volume of letters written to Grout by students and colleagues expressing their appreciation for her forty years of service at Duke. The second series, Correspondence, has a brief selection of letters related to Grout's professional career, her 1958 travels to Southern Africa, and work on the Dedication Committee of Baldwin Auditorium. The third series, Addresses and Writings, includes a variety of speeches, papers, and reports written by Grout over her career. Topics include the need for physical education for women, American physical education compared to that of Europe, and the history of physical education for women at Duke. Also included in this series are several speeches made by Grout at the retirement parties of other faculty and staff of the Woman's College. The final series, Professional Travels, documents Grout's international travels to Europe in 1938 and 1958, where she studied the physical education programs of Sweden, Holland, and Norway.

The Duke University Women's Department of Health and Physical Education began in about 1926 and merged with the Men's Physical Education Department in 1975. The Women's Department was responsible for providing required physical education courses, overseeing recreational and athletic activities, and providing a major in physical education. The Department had three chairmen during its existence: Julia R. Grout, Betty F. McCue, and Elizabeth C. Bookhout. The Women's Department of Health and Physical Education Records include correspondence, reports, brochures, publicity materials, student records, scrapbooks, and photographs. Major topics include the curriculum and administration of the department, student attitudes toward P.E., the attempt to build or renovate the gymnasium facility for women, the eventual merging of the Women's and Men's departments, and the effect of Title IX on women's athletics. The Women's Department of Health and Physical Education Records consist of correspondence, reports, brochures, publicity materials, student records, scrapbooks, and photographs. The records are organized into two series: Alphabetical Files and Scrapbooks.

The alphabetical files primarily cover the period from the 1930s to 1975. Of note are photographs of women participating in physical education classes and sports; materials from the Women's Athletic Association and Women's Recreation Association; several surveys and reports from the 1960s and 1970s about women students' feelings and attitudes toward physical education; correspondence, estimates, and reports about the proposed building of a new facility for the department; correspondence and many reports which document the struggle with the administration to maintain the Department as a separate unit from the men's department in the 1970s; materials that discuss the effect of Title IX on women's sports and the growth of women's sports in the 1970s. Major figures include Julia R. Grout and Elizabeth C. Bookhout, both of whom served as Chairman of the department. The Alphabetical Files also include information on students who majored in physical education. In accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as amended, Duke University permits students to inspect their education records and limits the disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records.

The Alphabetical Files are arranged by broad subjects: Addresses, Administration, Annual Reports, Budget, Correspondence, Curriculum, Departmental Studies and Reports, Facilities, History, Photographs, Publicity, Recreation, Staff Meetings, Task Force and Curriculum Committee Action, and Women's Athletics. Within each of these subsections, materials are arranged either chronologically or alphabetically. The original arrangement of the materials has been maintained as much as possible.

The Scrapbooks are compilations of photographs, clippings, programs, correspondence, and other memorabilia. There are three books which date from 1932 to 1975.
