Robert F. Durden is a professor emeritus of history at Duke University. The Pictorial Works Reference Collection contains files of printed materials that depict the Trinity College and Duke University campuses. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

This collection consists of publications that feature photographs and drawings of the Trinity College and Duke University campuses along with descriptive text. The publications were sent to prospective students and used in publicity and fundraising.

Collection consists of computer files comprising oral histories conducted by students with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, or Queer (LGBTQ) Duke alumni. The oral histories document the inviduduals' experiences as members of the LGBTQ community before, during, and after their time at Duke. The alumni attended Duke between the mid-1970s and 2000s and describe experiences at and around Duke and Durham, North Carolina from a variety of perspectives and time periods. The oral histories were collected as part of the Spring 2015 class LGBTQ History and Activism: Duke, Durham, and Beyond. Computer files include audio files (WAV and MP3), field notes and tape logs (DOC and DOCX), and the occasional supporting document file.

Duke admitted the first five African American undergraduates in September, 1963. In 2013, the University held a year-long celebration called Commemorating 50 Years of Black Students at Duke with a variety of academic, artistic, and service-oriented events. The collection includes programs, brochures, clippings, materials kept by Staff Director of the commemoration Keith Daniel, reflections written by alumni, and interviews with some of the first black undergraduate students recorded in 2012.

The collection includes a binder kept by Keith Daniel in his role as staff director of Commemorating 50 Years, programs, brochures, newsclippings, short reflections written by alumni at events in New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, and a DVD of interviews with the first black undergraduate students conducted during the class reunion of 2012. The binder includes correspondence, meeting notes, schedules, and other materials related to the planning of events during the year-long commemoration.

The University Archives Web Archives Collection was compiled by University Archives staff beginning in 2010. The University Archives Web Archive Collection consists of approx. 450 website snapshots comprising 1.8 terabytes. The majority of the collection are Duke University-affiliated sites, either built on domains owned by the University or on external platforms by affiliated offices, departments, or organizations. Website snapshots include those of administrative offices, academic departments, athletic teams, public relations offices, publications, and student organizations. Also included are some websites related to individual faculty, controversies involving Duke community members, and web content related to student activism.

The University Archives Web Archive Collection consists of approximately 450 website snapshots comprising 3.1 terabytes captured between 2010 and the present. The majority of the collection are Duke University-affiliated sites, either built on domains owned by the University or on external platforms by affiliated offices, departments, or organizations.

The collection is arranged into eight series: Administration, Academics, Athletics, Public Relations, Student Organizations, Campus Controversies, Miscellaneous, Publications, and Student Activism. The Administration Series includes websites of Duke administrative offices and units. The Academics Series includes websites of academic colleges, departments, and programs, as well as research institutes, interdisciplinary programs, and materials related to faculty. The Athletics Series includes websites of the Duke Athletics program as well as student-run club athletics. The Public Relations Series includes websites related to Duke's communication with employees, the government, students, and the general public. The Student Organizations Series is the largest grouping in the collection, and includes websites of general interest groups, the Greek system, honors societies, selective living groups, arts organizations, political and social cause organizations, religious and cultural organizations, service organizations, and student government. The Campus Controversies Series includes websites collected about controversial events involving Duke and its student body. The Miscellaneous Series consists of several websites that do not fit into the above series.The Publications Series consists of the websites of various publications produced by Duke and Duke-affiliated organizations. The Student Activism series consists of websites, social media content, and individual blog posts and online articles related to various movements on campus led by students.

Due to the size of the collection, the techniques and tools of web harvesting, and the evolving nature of the Internet, some websites have been crawled more comprehensively than others and are represented more faithfully than others.

The Duke Vigil was a silent demonstration at Duke University, April 5-11, 1968, following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The collection features announcements, flyers, publications, handouts, correspondence, reports, ephemera, press releases, clippings, a diary, sound recordings and WDBS broadcasts, and photographs. Individuals prominent within the collection include John Blackburn, Kenneth Clark, John Strange, David Henderson, Duke President Douglas Knight, Samuel DuBois Cook, and Wright Tisdale. Major subjects include student demonstrations, race relations, Duke University employee wages and labor union, and the anniversary and reunion of the Vigil in 1988. Materials range in date from 1968 to 1988. English.

The collection features a variety of materials documenting the Vigil at Duke University from April 5-11, 1968. These materials originate from numerous sources and were compiled by University Archives staff for teaching and research. The first series, Subject files, contains primary documents, including announcements, flyers, publications, handouts, correspondence, reports, and ephemera; media coverage including press releases and clippings; personal papers and a diary about the Vigil from John Blackburn, Kenneth Clark, John Strange, and David Henderson; and analyses and materials relating to the anniversary and reunion of the Vigil in 1988.

The Sound recordings series features five audiotapes made by a Duke student during the Vigil. Additional sound recordings can be found in the Related collections series. The WDBS records feature eleven audiotapes of radio broadcasts on events during the Vigil. These posters typically depict the entire team posing for a photograph, sometimes with the team coach; several posters commemorate championship wins or the game results for the season, while a few feature only the Blue Devil or an illustration of some team members. Formed around 1950, the Duke University Arts Council planned music and art events on Duke's campus, such as concerts and exhibits. It also created a lending library of musical recordings and art reproductions, and it produced a radio program, "Arts Council on the Air." After a period of inactivity, the Arts Council dissolved in 1970. The Black History at Duke Reference Collection chronicles the integration of Duke University. This history includes the Silent Vigil; the Allen Building Takeover; the creation of a Black Student Alliance; the development of a Black Studies Program; interactions between the university and the Durham community; as well as individual efforts from students, faculty, and administrators. The collection contains publications, fliers, reports, memos, handbooks, manuals, lists, clippings, and a bibliography. Major subjects include black students, civil rights demonstrations, and the effects of desegregation on administrative policies. English.

The collection contains publications, fliers, reports, memos, handbooks, manuals, lists, clippings, and a bibliography. The collection is divided into six series: The End of Segregation, Black Faculty, Black Studies Program, Student Groups, Public Forums, and Clippings.

The first series, The End of Segregation, includes a bibliography, background materials about desegregation efforts, statistics, reports, and memos. The second series, Black Faculty, includes clippings, and a list of black professors, assistant professors, lecturers, non-tenure track instructors, graduate teaching and research assistants. The appendix to the list includes the Medical School and School of Nursing faculty.

In 1968, there were discussions on campus about establishing a black studies or Afro-American studies program, but no action was taken by the university. One of the demands of the students who took over the Allen Building on Feb. 13, 1969, was for the establishment of a fully accredited department of Afro-American Studies. On May 2, 1969, the Black Studies Committee submitted a proposal to the Undergraduate Faculty Council of the Arts and Sciences for the creation of the Black Studies Program and the courses were approved by the curriculum committee. Walter Burford was named program head in 1970. The third series, Black Studies Program, chronicles some of the history of this program and includes drafts of proposals, enrollment statistics, flyers, photocopies of clippings, and other materials.

The fourth series, Student Groups, contains materials from a variety of groups. Included are: the Afro-American Society, the Association of African Students, the Black Student Alliance, the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, Black Fraternities and Sororities, and others. The fifth series, Public Forums, includes materials on a number of speakers, rallies, demonstrations, boycotts; one newspaper advertisement; and one Internet site. The sixth series, Clippings, contains mostly photocopies of newspaper articles. The clippings are from 1967-2001 and undated, and cover a wide variety of topics. Of note is a series of articles that appeared in the Chronicle, "Black and Blue: Blacks at Duke," Feb. 13-Feb.17, 1984.

This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

The collection includes newsletters, brochures, memoranda, clippings, statistics, reports, forms, printed matter, and other material concerning the University's public image and its management. The bulk dates are the 1960s to the 1990s. Among the items are blank reporting forms sent to faculty and staff to submit information for publicity; "Leads and Angles, Slants and Features: a handbook prepared for newspaper, magazine, and feature writers visiting Duke University," (April 1939); "Whom, Me?" a complication of national publicity following Professor A.C. Jordan's comments about Americans' poor grammar (1966); a series of publicity cards and statistics sheets, circa 1971, about the University and its various attractions including the Chapel, Gardens, Medical Center, and Art Museum; and "Duke Information Places Outside the Library Systems", a pamphlet apparently produced by the East Campus Library staff in 1980. Subjects include news staff assignments and facts and statistics about the University. In December of 1972, the News Service's director, Don Seaver, asked his staff to contribute items to a "Duke Facts" binder notebook. This binder included statistics, brief write-ups of the University and selected departments, class profiles, brochures, lists of several kinds, and other sorts of information. The binder was kept updated through the early 1980s. It is now stored in two file folders.

Local groups represented include campus chapters of denominational organizations, and the Coalition on Chapel Policy, a committee formed in 1979/80 to advocate for changes in the Chapel’s administrative procedures after University Minister Robert Young dismissed Assistant Minister Helen Crotwell.

The 75th Anniversary (1924-1999) of the founding of Duke University series includes logos, a commemorative mailing cancellation stamp, a press release, and a sound recording of a speech given by John Koskinen on the Y2K conversion. The 100th Anniversary (1838-1938) of the beginnings of Duke University series includes printed materials, correspondence, Centennial Fund records, a diary, publications, invitation lists, congratulations from other institutions, and several complete packets of centennial celebration materials. Also included is a time capsule, labeled: "1939-2039. A collection of items presented to the President of Duke University at the Centennial Celebration, April 22, 1939; not to be opened until the occasion of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the institution." Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-1994) attended the Duke University School of Law from 1934 to 1937, graduating number three in a class of twenty-six. During his three years at Duke, Nixon was active in the Duke Bar Association and was elected President in his senior year. The Richard M. Nixon Reference Collection contains academic transcripts, personal and administrative correspondence related to law school, letters of recommendation, newspaper clippings, and reference inquiries and correspondence related to both the honorary degree controversy in 1954 and the Watergate scandal in the early 1970's when he was President of the United States. The Duke Memorial was formed in 1929 to honor Washington, Benjamin N., and James B. Duke. The group worked on several projects, including building the Memorial Chapel in Duke Chapel, financing the purchase of Duke Homestead, and building a statue of James B. Duke. The collection consists mainly of financial documents, as well as general correspondence, minutes, and proposals and suggestions. Major topics include the construction of Memorial Chapel and the sarcophagi within, the purchase of Duke Homestead, and the financing of the James B. Duke Statue. Major correspondents include James A. Thomas, W. W. Flowers, and Alex H. Sands. English.

These photographs were taken during the initial construction of Duke University, 1925-1932. There is one set of pictures for East Campus and two sets for West, and modern copy prints and copy negatives of some images. The collection includes approximately 1000 mounted images in two bound sets (copy 1 and copy 2), along several file folders of mounted and unmounted prints.

There is one set of pictures for East Campus and two sets for West, and modern copy prints and copy negatives of some images. One set of the West Campus images (#2) is not accessioned. The other (#1) was received from the estate of W.F. Lee, likely a son of Arthur C. Lee who was the chief engineer for the construction. It is the more complete set (A93-73: five volumes + 25 unbound prints).

Most of the prints are numbered and dated on the front in white ink, and many for West Campus have a number, date, and description of the verso. Some of the prints were made into glass slides; these slides are in the Frank Clyde Brown Papers.

The collection includes approximately 1000 mounted images in two bound sets (copy 1 and copy 2), along several file folders of mounted and unmounted prints. The images range in date from 1925-1932.

The work of at least three photographers is represented in the Progress Pictures. For the East Campus photos, there are prints having the same base number with an A or B suffix, but which were taken on different dates. Some are marked on the verso "from Ramsey Studio, Durham, N.C." and others "Whitney's Camera Craft Shop, 106 1/2 E. Main St., Durham". The "A" and "B" designations are not consistent, and we cannot say that Ramsey was photographer "A and Whitney "B". Ramsey's work predominates in the early photographs and Whitney's in the later. Whitney's work is also represented in the West Campus pictures.

Also in the West Campus mounted prints are pictures marked "C.W. Richardson, Photographer, Duke University" or "Richardson's Photo Service…" According to the Bulletin of Duke University, volume 24, no.7a "The first twenty years" a C.W. Richardson was a member of the staff of the medical art and illustration division, which was started in 1933 (p. 44) and which included photographers. There are also unmounted numbered and unnumbered prints taken by Richardson. Some of these prints are marked News Service or Alumni Affairs. Some mounted West Campus prints are not credited, or if they were stamped by the photographer, the stamp has been covered by the mounting linen. Among the unmounted numbered and unnumbered prints, some are stamped News Service or Alumni Affairs.

This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. The Committees Reference Collection primarily contains administrative correspondence, reports, and meeting minutes and resolutions, related to various Duke University committees.

From 1924 through 1958 the architectural firm of Horace Trumbauer of Philadelphia, Pa. was hired to design much of Duke University's East and West campuses. Horace Trumbauer, William O. Frank, and Julian Abele were the firm's main designers. Frank Clyde Brown, S.W. Myatt and A.C. Lee were administrators of construction at Duke University during this time. Some of the buildings designed by the firm are the Duke University Chapel, the Allen Administration Building, Cameron Indoor Stadium, Baldwin Auditorium, the East Campus Union Building, the East Campus Central Heating Plant Complex, the Carr Building (formerly known as the Class Room Building), the Medical School and Hospital, the Nurses' Home, the Law School, the School of Religion, the Chemistry Building, and the Botany and Biology Building. The firm also designed the Giles, Alspaugh, Pegram, Bassett, and Brown residence halls (formerly known as Dormitories 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Included in the collection are blueprints and printed material relating to the planning and construction of buildings at Duke University from 1924 to 1958.

This collection is comprised of architectural drawings and reproduced architectural drawings of buildings on the Duke University campus and nearby. The dates of this collection range from 1924 to 1952, with the bulk of material from 1926-1938.

A number of Related Collections also contain building specifications, daily work logs, financial ledgers, contracts, and general correspondence for most buildings. Correspondence (often including specifications) exchanged primarily between Horace Trumbauer, William O. Frank, Julian Abele, and Frank Clyde Brown (Duke University Comptroller), S.W. Myatt (Assistant to the President) and A.C. Lee (Chief Engineer for Duke University Building) about general construction at Duke University. Additionally, published building specifications can be found in the library catalog. Other blueprints, sketches, and drawings are folded and interfiled among established collections and within the Operations and Maintenance Department Records. General building specifications, plans for proposed buildings, daily work logs, financial ledgers, contracts, and general correspondence are located in the Operations and Maintenance Department Records, as well as the Frank C. Angier B. Duke Memorial, Inc. records, 1923-1999 14 Linear Feet — approx. 9500 Items

The Angier B. Duke Memorial was established in 1925 by Benjamin N. Duke to honor his son, Angier Buchanan Duke (1884-1923, Trinity, '05). The program was reworked in 1946-1947 when the Memorial Scholarship became the University's premier undergraduate award. The collection contains annual reports of various committees, correspondence and memoranda, studies, proposals, financial material, and miscellaneous material. A majority of the material pertains to loans, awards, and scholarships funded by the Angier B. Duke Memorial and ranges in date from 1923-1999.

The collection consists of approximately 500 black and white and color postcards depicting various buildings and campus scenes of Duke University and Trinity College. Dates of the postcards range from 1905 to the present, but many are undated.

The Departments and Academic Divisions Reference Collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. This collection includes materials about departments, centers, programs, sections, institutes, cooperative programs (mostly Duke-UNC), and a few other units. These last ones are in the series titled "Others" and are things that did not fit anywhere else. For instance, School of Spanish Studies was not a school in the sense we now use the term. There are also files on the Woman's College and School of Nursing. The department is the basic academic administrative unit in Arts and Sciences, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the School of Medicine. Historically, other instructional and research units have included those designated as "Office of ..." and "... Laboratory," as in, for example, the Parapsychology Laboratory. Institutes, Programs, and Centers are academic units created to foster interdisciplinary work. Sections were created in 1988 to facilitate the development of new academic efforts of limited size in subject areas where the creation of a department was not warranted.

Lillian McCredy Duke was the first wife of James B. Duke. The two were married in 1904 and divorced in 1906. The papers in this collection are related to the divorce proceedings. The materials in this collection contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, case exhibits, trial transcripts, and envelopes. The material ranges in date from 1904-1906.

The Duke Divorce records span the years 1904 to 1906. The two boxes contain correspondence and media regarding the divorce trial between Lillian and James B. Duke and appear to have been part of the evidence submitted at the divorce trial. The bulk of the correspondence is letters from Lillian to both James and her aunt G. E. Townes. There is one letter addressed to Lillian sent by her aunt. The rest of the material includes clippings, exhibits from the trial, trial transcripts, a detective report, and a bill of sale to Lillian's brother John A. Fletcher. The collection is grouped into the following series: Correspondence, Clippings, Court Case Related, Exhibits, and Publications.
