Collection contains photographs from Inbal Abergil's projects: N.O.K.- Next of Kin and Making Peace with Death.
The N.O.K- Next of Kin series consists of 20 chromogenic color prints. The project "examines the ways in which American families memorialize their relatives killed in military conflict. Abergil traveled throughout the U.S. to meet with relatives of fallen soldiers and military personnel and to document their methods of coping with loss through the preservation of personal effects. The images reflect her ongoing interest in the representation of war and focus on the personal altars and private displays of mementos maintained by families." The photographs are signed and dated by Inbal Abergil on verso.
Making Peace with Death contains folios with portrait photographs of Casualty Notification Officers (CNOs) and chaplains who notify families that their relatives have been killed in military service. Each folio contains two digital chromogenic prints of a pair, one CNO and one chaplain, as well as printed quotations from each officer. To create these portraits, Abergil used a 4x5 film camera and a mobile studio set up at the homes of the CNOs. The CNOs first shared their story with Abergil, and then they dressed and prepared for the portrait as if they were going to notify a family of a casualty.
