Case Files Subseries

Extent:
128 boxes
Scope and content:

Large series of ACLU of NC files dating from the 1970s to the 2000s, relating to cases that were either taken to court or settled out of court. There are also investigative files involving cases completely out of the court system. Files contain requests for assistance, rejections by the ACLU-NC, or materials relating to the eventual pursuit of cases. Some of the legal cases span many file folders; Claudio v. USA, involving an artist's right to display nude art, is the largest group. Roughly arranged in chronological order by decade.

Researchers should be aware that privacy laws govern the use or publication of information in these files. As with other legal files, the names of the defendants and others have been redacted from this collection guide but are present on folder titles in the boxes.
