Background
- Scope and content:
-
Collection consists of publications, event flyers and ephemera, and administrative materials such as bylaws, correspondence, and meeting minutes, that document the activities and networks of the Junior Division of the Advertising Club of Los Angeles in the 1930s. Much of the collection material relates to the annual conferences held by the Pacific Advertising Clubs Association (PACA), often referred to as "the University of Advertising" in the collection. Publications, correspondence, photographs, programs, and other event ephemera detail the planning of and participation in annual PACA conferences by the Advertising Club of Los Angeles, the Junior Division, the Los Angeles Advertising Women, and other advertising-related organizations. Other materials such as meeting minutes, event flyers, and The Ad Cub document the Junior Division's regular social and educational activities, as well as Edward Russek's leadership of the division. To a lesser extent, some materials in the collection also reflect the role of women in the advertising industry, including The Ad-Vocation (published by the Los Angeles Advertising Women), "The Feminine Touch" column in The Ad Cub, "Consumer Education" talks given by women in the industry, and event flyers, programs, and photographs that depict participation from both men and women. Individuals who appear throughout the collection include Edward Russek and Thaine Mallett of the Junior Division, Frank McKellar and D. D. Durr of the Los Angeles Advertising Club, and Lou Koch of Foster & Kleiser.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The Junior Division of the Advertising Club of Los Angeles was founded in September 1931 by a group of young professionals interested in or already working in advertising. The Junior Division restricted its membership to men between the ages of 20 and 28 and was dedicated to "mutually developing our knowledge of advertising, creating a sympathetic understanding of the allied crafts, and promoting...an active interest in problems and discussions dealing with advertising." In the 1930s the Junior Division held weekly meetings that featured presentations from members of the larger Advertising Club of Los Angeles and others within the advertising industry. The presentations covered different aspects of advertising, including printing, displays, history, and advertising in different media. The Junior Division also held events with other advertising organizations, including the Girls Junior Division, and it was a constituent member of the Pacific Advertising Clubs Association (PACA). Edward "Eddie" A. Russek (1907-1975) was president of the Junior Division in the 1930s.
