Drafted into U.S. Army in November, 1969. Trained with Aviation as a helicopter mechanic, maintaining CH47 (Chinook) helicopters (the larger ones with two rotors). He was sent to Vietnam in July, 1970, where he was assigned to the Americal Division at Chu Lai. He repaired Chinooks that were shot up, and did routine maintenance, and when not otherwise occupied, served as a door gunner or navigator on those same helicopters. Left service in July, 1971.
