William Shotwell grew up on a tobacco farm in the Virgilina Community of Halifax County, Virginia. He was drafted into service in 1966 and spent most of 1967 and 1968 with the 185th Light Maintenance Battalion, stationed at Long Binh, the largest American base in Vietnam, just north of Saigon. He worked as a maintenance mechanic at Long Binh and participated in numerous search and destroy missions after the Tet offensive of 1968.
