Biographical / historical:

The Alliance for Audited Media (AAM) is a research firm that provides data services to the advertising and publishing industries. It is headquartered in Arlington Heights, Ill. The firm was established in 1914 by the Association of National Advertisers as the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). The original aim was to audit and tabulate circulation and geographical distribution numbers of subscribing regional and national newspapers and print publications in order to refine identification of target audiences for advertised goods and services. Over time the scope of operations expanded to include digital media. The ABC was rebranded as the Alliance for Audited Media in 2012. (www.auditedmedia.com)

Acquisition information:
The Alliance for Audited Media microfilmed reports were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift in 2020.
Processing information:

Processed by Richard Collier, June 2021;

Accessions described in this collection guide: 2020-0054.

Arrangement:

Organized into the following series: Audit Reports; Addenda; Corrections; Contract Files; Prospects; Publisher Statements; Other ABC Products; and Documentation.

The collection description and contents list are based on notes provided on the individual reel containers and accompanying documentation; the reels have not been viewed to verify that information. In general, contents of each microfilm reel are organized by state, then city, for the United States publications, and by city, then province, for Canadian publications. Some variations to this arrangement occur with some regularity: sometimes Canadian and other international publications are interfiled with U.S. publications, for instance Canada appearing between California and Colorado. On some reels reports were photographed out of order, in reverse alphabetical order, or in no apparent order at all. These variations have been noted in the contents list where they have been identified on the individual reel containers or accompanying documentation. Accompanying documents, such as detailed contents of individual reels, have been removed from the individual reel cases and filed in folders within the larger storage containers for the reels.
