Embossed on lower front corner of photograph: Mssr.s Stearn, Photo: Cambridge. No other markings on item. Image is of crowds of men in the street, with a few women visible; a female effigy hangs above the street. A large banner on the side of the building echoes Shakespeare, and ends with "Here's no place for you maids."

Biographical / historical:
Photograph, taken by Thomas Stearns or studio assistants, documents a scene during the Cambridge University Senate House vote in May 1897 on whether to accept women as full members of the University. The vote was 661 in favor and 1,707 opposed. In the aftermath, male protesters maimed and decapitated an effigy of a female figure.
