Willa Cather (1873-1947) was a well-known author. Printed on back: Charles L. Ritzmann, 5th Avenue / 58478. Crossed out: Copyright by Paul Thompson / 10 Spruce Street New York. Handwritten in pencil on back: Willa Sibert Cather (twice) and various editorial markings.
- Biographical / historical:
- "Austrian-born Charles L. Ritzmann (1852-?), whose gallery occupied 943 Broadway...issued celebrity photographs under his own brand under the late 1880s. He did not take these pictures himself; indeed some were rebranded images from other photographers whose stocks he cannibalized. Others were taken by anonymous operators. His photographic sitting room operated at a second premises 171 ½ Broadway...Eventually he moved his gallery to 228 Fifth Avenue where it resided during the first decade of the twentieth century."
