Embossed on lower front corner of photograph: Mssr.s Stearn, Photo: Cambridge. Title inked in capital letters on lower front edge of mount. Image shows the full façade of the Senate building, with crowds of men.

Biographical / historical:
Photograph, taken by Thomas Stearns or studio assistants, documents a scene during the Cambridge University Senate House vote in May 1897 on whether to accept women as full members of the University. The vote was 661 in favor and 1,707 opposed. In the aftermath, male protesters maimed and decapitated an effigy of a female figure.
