In the photograph, Bell is seated with her palette in front of her easel, upon which rests a portrait in progress of Hamlet; a dog is on the floor at her side.

Biographical / historical:
Clara Louise Bell (1886-1978) was a miniatures painter who was born in Ohio. She went to school at the Cleveland School of Art and at the Art Students League of New York.
