Background

Scope and content:

Correspondence and documents, mainly dating from 1770-1825, regarding Baudry des Lozières' career in French military and diplomatic service in Hispaniola and elsewhere. The papers reflect his part in the French defense of Port au Prince during an uprising of poor whites in 1789-1790, his return to France, and his temporary emigration to Louisiana during the French Revolution, 1793, the events of which voyage and a second one are related in his books, "Voyage à la Louisiane et sur le continent de l'Amérique septentrionale ... 1794-98" (published 1802); and "Second voyage à la Louisiane" (1803). The remainder of the papers relate to his subsequent return to France and his life there, interrupted only by military service in Italy. There is one item related to the Haitian revolution of 1791-1804: a French certificate of ownership for Baudry des Lozières' property in Saint-Domingue, dated 1800.
