Scope and content:

Series houses materials about Diamonstein-Spielvogel's education, her interests, and her family that contribute to an understanding of her personal life and relationships, and her development as an advocate and pioneer in public service. There are nine subseries: Art, Education, Family, General Working Files, Personal Aesthetics, Photographs, Carl Spielvogel, Vacations, and Wedding Artifacts and Scrapbooks.

Materials include letters, greeting cards, notes, clippings, printed materials, scrapbooks, photographs, slides, and artifacts, including family materials from Diamonstein-Spielvogel's husband Carl Spielvogel and her mother, Sally Simmons neƩ Dworkin. The earliest materials consist of several family photographs taken before Diamonstein-Spielvogel's birth. Later materials pertain to Diamonstein-Spielvogel's personal art collection, home furnishings, decor, jewelry and attire, offering a variety of items from fabric samples to insurance appraisals.

Highlights include materials surrounding Diamonstein-Spielvogel's education and early career as an educator as well as photographs and manuscript materials pertaining to Diamonstein-Spielvogel's homes in New York, which have been recognized for their architecture and interior design. There are numerous personal photos, as well as publicity shots of Diamonstein-Spielvogel.

Oversize materials are described at the end of the series. Other personal documents may be found throughout the collection, especially in the Correspondence Series; personal artifacts such as travel memorabilia are housed in the Visual Arts Materials Series. Audiovisual recordings are located in the Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Audiovisual Materials Collection.
