Extent:
9.2 Linear Feet (11 boxes, approximately 4273 items)
109 Megabytes (510 files)
Physical description:
Comprises 973 unique slides; approximately 2900 slide duplicates; 293 photographic prints, paper records, and contact sheets; and 107 negatives.
Scope and content:

This large series of images from the Behind the Veil (BTV) project is composed of two main groups: historical images of African Americans and associated items, assembled from sources other than interviewees, circa 1864 to 1993; and photographs of Behind the Veil project activities and people, taken by BTV staff between 1993 and 1997. Additional slides include a group of over 300 unlabeled images taken at unknown interview locations. There is also a large set of approximately 2900 duplicate slides from the historical interview materials donated by interviewees that were labeled and boxed by BTV staff. Dates reflect image content rather than date of creation, with the exception of the duplicate slides. Formats include black-and-white and color slides and photographic prints, contact sheets, and negatives; the latter have been rehoused in a separate box for preservation purposes. There are also many digital image files created by BTV staff, chiefly for publications and publicity purposes.

Processing information:

Dates reflect image content rather than date of creation. The image carriers (slides, prints, and negatives) were created chiefly by Behind the Veil (BTV) staff from 1993-1997. Names, dates, and titles associated with photographic images derive from information recorded by Behind the Veil staff on original folders, the backs of photographs, or on the original photo sleeves. In the absence of such information, it has been extrapolated by library staff from other sources when possible; these include other BTV records or other images. Titles on digital images usually derive from the label on the computer diskette, or have been supplied by library staff.

Arrangement:

Images are arranged in the following five subseries: Additional Historic Images of African Americans and Communities, circa 1864-1997, bulk: 1880-1970; Contemporary Images from Behind the Veil Operations, circa 1993-1997; Slides: Themed Sets, approximately 1993-1995; Contemporary Slides: Unarranged, Unknown Locations, 1993-1997; Duplicate Slides. Early dates reflect image content rather than date of creation.

Physical facet:
Approximately 4273 items 510 files
Related material:

Photographs of interviewees, staff, and communities taken by Behind the Veil staff at interview locations from 1993-1997 are listed at the end of each regional series in this collection guide. The historical images of African Americans reproduced from interviewee-donated materials are listed with their associated interview entries in the Interviews Series of this collection guide. Many folders of paper records documenting the activities of Behind the Veil staff who worked on processing the thousands of photographic items in the BTV collection are located in the Project Records series.
