Discusses family's health, including several deaths; discusses Civil War and post-war experiences of different members of the family, including James, Joseph, and Patrick who served in the Confederacy and were imprisoned and wounded. Brown writes that he plans to "sell out and go to Texas."
The letter also discusses the family's former slaves. The author writes "most of the Negrows of this country have changed homes and some of them keep changing about one third of them is working on farms and dont work so well as usual your aunt Jane and aunt Susans negrows left ... my negrows remained with me until Christmas and said that they would remain with me if I had a home in this country."
Also contains a receipt from Joseph Brown to W.H. Brown dated 1837 June 4.
