Scope and content:

The focus of this subseries is on CJPC's efforts to improve north Carolina prison conditions and halt the building of private prisons in NC. Materials are arranged into topical subseries further subdivided by project, and may include correspondence, newsletters, photographs, articles, fundraising and legislative materials, and materials on alternative penalties for death row inmates. Also houses some inmate art. There are also some large tear sheets with goals and planning from a PJP meeting and an oversize 1970s chart showing NC Congressional districts.

The largest file group, the Prison and Jail Project (PJP), was the predecessor agency to the Carolina Justice Policy Center; in 1982 it was subsumed as a CJPC-based project which focused on prison reform.

Projects and topical files include the Ashram Project; CJAC (Durham Criminal Justice Advisory Committee); Cost of Incarceration; DCJC (Durham County Justice Center); EC (Esperanza Committee); GCC (Governors Crime Commission); IGC (Inmate Grievance Commission); PJP (Prison and Jail Project); PJP - Friends and Families; and PP (Private Prisons).
