Phillip Robbins was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in Durham County, North Carolina. One of the convictions was overturned on appeal because of a faulty jury instruction. The second conviction was reversed in motion for appropriate relief proceedings. He was never retried and in 2002, following the passage of legislation to exempt persons with mental disabilities from the death penalty, Robbins was adjudicated as mentally disabled and resentenced to life in prison.
