The project follows the lives of a group of young Latino American men, their friends and families, chiefly of Puerto Rican descent, from the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, photographed by Vincent Cianni from the mid 1990s to the late 2000s. In this series are 294 black-and-white photographic prints and a set of 35 and 120 millimeter negatives as well as eight Polaroid negatives.
The images document the culture of in-line skating and life on the streets of the neighborhood, social occasions, and family life. Also included are photographs of the Bronx, of a baby shower in Queens, NY, and from a wedding in Fairborn, Ohio of a young couple who appear in other images from this series. Many of the images were published in Cianni's book, We Skate Hardcore: Photographs from Brooklyn's South Side (2004).
Processes include duotone and gelatin silver. Print sizes range from 8x10 inches and larger. Most are signed and dated by the photographer.
The series also houses the maquette for Cianni's photobook (version 1, 2000), and the printer's dummy (versions 2-3, 2001-2004), as well as a set of born-digital materials comprising interviews, a video, video stills, and other supporting materials related to the project.
