Background

Scope and content:

Collection contains seven advertising "Fact Sheets" created by the Advertising and Sales Promotion Department of the Coca-Cola Company. The sheets address different avenues for marketing Coca-Cola, including television commercials and programs, Family Reunion Day, kits promoting the pairing of Coca-Cola with cheese and crackers, and more.

Of particular note is Fact Sheet 315, which addresses marketing to Black communities, whom the company identifies as an "important market segment." This fact sheet uses language such as "tell it like it is" and "soul series" to describe this marketing effort.

Several of the fact sheets make reference to attachments or additional materials--please note that these attachments are not included in the collection. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Biographical / historical:

The Coca-Cola Company and its flagship product, Coca-Cola (a carbonated soft drink), were founded by John S. Pemberton in 1886 in Atlanta, G.A. The drink was named by Frank Robinson, the company's accountant. In the 1960s the company launched advertising campaigns with slogans "Things Go Better with Coke" (1963) and "It's the Real Thing" (1969). In 1969 the Advertising and Sales Promotion Department created "Fact Sheets" with information about different marketing campaigns and materials.
