Julia Comfort (1889-1983) was an actress and model who appeared in a variety of print advertisements and publication illustrations during the 1920s. Collection includes black-and-white photographs and print advertisements that document Comfort's career in advertising photography. Products include apparel, automobiles, cleaning products, cosmetics, eyeglass lenses, Green Stamps, hygiene products, life insurance, mouthwash, paper, and thread. Companies represented in the collection include Bauer & Black; Clark's; J & P Coats; Johnson & Johnson; Lambert Pharmacal (later Warner-Lambert), Lever Brothers; Metropolitan Life; Norwich Pharmacal; and Sperry and Hutchinson. Photographers and studios represented include Aldene; Dana Merrill; Ira Martin; Joel Feder; Lejaren Hiller; and Underwood & Underwood. Acquired as part of the John W. Biographical / historical:

Julia Comfort (1889-1983) was an actress and model who appeared in a variety of print advertisements and publication illustrations during the 1920s.

Julia Comfort was born Julia Alice Loretta Van Daniker on August 14, 1889 in Baltimore. She married George Henry Kleppisch, who changed his surname to Comfort, in 1910. From around 1918 to 1931 Julia had a career as an actress and model, appearing in print advertisements for a number of national brand products as well as posing for stock photographs used in advertising and magazine illustration. Around 1931 she joined her husband's real estate business and worked there until the couple retired in 1949 to a farm in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Comfort died on August 15, 1983.
