Photographer: Unknown. Inscription: "Apollonowi i Ewelinie Korzeniowskim z Ojcowskim błogosławieństwem na pamiątkę d. 24 Grud. 1861." Translation: "For Apollo and Ewa Korzeniowski with fatherly blessings, in remembrance 24 Dec. 1861."
- Biographical / historical:
- Photo inscribed to Joseph Conrad's parents, Apollo and Ewa Korzeniowski on Christmas Eve 1861, Ewa's name day. Wacław Lasocki's memoir (1933) includes a very similar single portrait identified as Adolf Pilchowski. Ewa's uncle Adolf Pilchowski had helped secure the couple's engagement. This photo would have been gifted while Conrad's father Apollo was in prison on charges of political conspiracy, following his arrest in October 1861. In April 1862, both Apollo and Ewa Korzeniowski were sentenced to exile by the Russian government.
