Photographer unknown. Location: Chernihiv (Ukraine).
- Biographical / historical:
- One of two photos in the album which are not portraits (see also No. 38). The location was identified by matching this photo with the renovated building visible on street-level maps in 2022 (Вулиця П'ятницька 31, Google, June 2015). Chernihiv was the second place of exile for the Korzeniowskis and where Joseph Conrad's mother Ewa died in April 1865. The church was shuttered and its cemetery destroyed in the early 20th century following the Revolution. The building was renovated for other uses in the Soviet period, altering the roofline. Local Catholics petitioned for its return in the 2000s but were denied. Its fate after February 2022 is unknown.
