Abstract:
Consumers' Research is an organization focused on consumer advocacy and protection, founded by Frederick Schlink in New York, N.Y. in 1927 as Consumers' Club and incorporated in 1929 as Consumers' Research, Inc. In 1935 a unionization dispute within the organization led to a strike, which resulted in a portion of the staff and management breaking off to form Consumers Union of United States (now Consumer Reports). Collection consists of correspondence between one Lester Anderson of Hayward, Calif. and Consumers' Research, primarily relating to news reports of the strike and Anderson's suggestions concerning what actions Consumers' Research should take. Also included is a pamphlet prepared by Consumers' Research and addressed to subscribers that outlined management's perspective of the strike and related incidents. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
