Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936 as Consumers Union. Dan Franklin was an executive at Consumers Union who served as Director of Labor Relations and Ethics Officer before retiring in 2013. Collection includes clippings, correspondence, departmental manuals; newsletters, photographs, pamphlets and other printed materials. Materials pertain to Consumers Union administrative matters; historical documents collected in support of planning for various events and anniversary celebrations; the move of the headquarters to Yonkers; and the organization's tax status as a nonprofit organization. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Biographical / historical:

Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936 as Consumers Union. Dan Franklin was an executive at Consumers Union who served as Director of Labor Relations and Ethics Officer before retiring in 2013.

Dan Frannklin joined Consumers Union in 1980 as Executive Assistant to the Director. In 1986 Franklin was named the coordinator for the 50th anniversary and related capital campaign, and moved into Facilities Planning, where he oversaw major projects including the construction of the automotive testing facility and Consumers Union's headquarters move from Mt. Vernon to Yonkers.

Prior to joining Consumers Union, Franklin received a BA from Syracuse University (American Studies, 1966) and an MA from San Diego State University (American Studies, 1972). Franklin served as Director of California Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) 1973-1976; an investigator with the City Attorney's office in San Diego 1976-1980.

The Consumer Reports. Dan Franklin papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift in 2019.
