Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936 as Consumers Union. Channing Lushbough is a biochemist who served as Associate Director of Consumers Union from 1971-1973. Collection includes correspondence, clippings, texts of speeches and testimonial statements, articles and other printed materials that pertain to Lushbough's tenure at Consumers Union. Topics include consumer product testing, detergent marketing, phosphates, microwave ovens (including a dispute with the Amana company) and discussions of Lushbough's employment status and the scope of his responsibilities. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Biographical / historical:

Channing Lushbough is a biochemist who served as Associate Director of Consumers Union from 1971-1973.

Channing Harden Lushbough was born in South Dakota in 1929. He attended the University of Chicago (AB 1948; AM, Political Science, 1952; PhD, Biochemistry and Nutrition, 1956). Before joining Consumers Union, Channing worked at Carnation Company (1950-1951); American Meat Institute (1954-1959); Mead Johnson Research Center (1959-1967); and Associated Hospital Services of New York (1967-1971). Channing joined Consumers Union as Associate Director in 1971 and left in 1973. After leaving Consumers Union, Channing worked for the Citizens' Commission on Science, Law and the Food Supply (1973-1975) and Kraft (beginning in 1975).

The Consumer Reports. Channing H. Lushbough papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from Consumer Reports in 2019.
