Containers:
Scope and content:

Letters to and copies of letters from Alfred Cumming regarding the governorship of Utah Territory. A selection of copied letters appears to have been originally part of Cumming's letterbook, also in this collection. Topics include disagreements of judicial authority; disagreements about the use of troops, including a letter from Lewis Cass (1859 Sept. 15); an agreement regarding Treasury funds for Utah; letters regarding crimes and punishments, including Cumming's refusal to commute an execution (1859 October 26); a letter from Alexander Stephens (1859 Nov. 12); and a letter from Lewis Cass requesting "an official report upon the present condition of the territory" (1859 Dec. 2). Cumming's report is copied in his letterbook in this collection. There are several additional documents regarding the investigation of the murder of Edward Beaty by Cub Johnson.
