Scope and content:

Personal papers of Sands, including correspondence and letterbooks; an account book, daybook, and ledger; check registers and stubs; and receipts. The correspondence primarily concerns family matters, including financial support for his parents, and business interests. The remainder of the papers details stock transactions and other business activities, including those of the Southern Audit Company of New York, Inc., of which he was a partner.

Biographical / historical:

Alexander Hamilton Sands Jr. was a friend and business associate of Benjamin N. Duke and James B. Duke and was an original trusteee of the Duke Endowment (1924-1960) and a trustee of Duke University (1946-1960). He was born April 25, 1891, in Richmond, Virginia, to parents Tucker K. and Mary Harvey Sands. He attended Richmond College (1905-1906?) and worked as a bookkeeper before succeeding Richard B. Arrington as Benjamin Duke's personal secretary and business agent in New York in 1913. In 1924, Sands became a founding trustee of the Duke Endowment. He was elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 1946. Sands remained a trustee of the university and the Duke Endowment until his death in New York City on April 22, 1960.
