- Biographical / historical:

Frederic L. Ellis (1915-2005) was born in Florida and attended Morehouse College. He began working for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance's Philadelphia branch in 1938, and gradually advanced to manage branches in Birmingham, Alabama, and Los Angeles, California. Ellis was active in the American civil rights movement and was a leader in several civic and community organizations, including the NAACP, the Second Life Baptist Church (Los Angeles), and the Los Angeles Management Association of Black Insurance Companies.
