Scope and content:

Collection consists of photographs, certificates, and some correspondence documenting select portions of Ellis's work with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and the insurance profession, as well as his engagement with civic organizations in Birmingham and Los Angeles.

Biographical / historical:

Frederic L. Ellis (1915-2005) was born in Florida and attended Morehouse College. He began working for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance's Philadelphia branch in 1938, and gradually advanced to manage branches in Birmingham, Alabama, and Los Angeles, California. Ellis was active in the American civil rights movement and was a leader in several civic and community organizations, including the NAACP, the Second Life Baptist Church (Los Angeles), and the Los Angeles Management Association of Black Insurance Companies.

The Frederic L. Ellis Papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a transfer from North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in 2024; NC Mutual received the collection as a gift from Ellis's family.
