Founded by David Davis Walker, Frank Ely, and others in 1883, based in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was acquired by Burlington Industries, Inc., in 1955.
Frank Ely (1842-1890) founded the dry goods store Ely, Janis & Co. in 1878 in St. Louis. The following year Ely formed a partnership with David Walker, Ely-Walker & Company, which incorporated as Ely & Walker Dry Goods Company in 1883. The company was sold to Burlington Industries in 1956, which continued the Ely & Walker brand of clothing. Ely & Walker was sold to Washington Manufacturing Company in 1964, and eventually acquired by Oxford Industries in 1995, which continued selling clothing under the Ely brand.

David D. Walker's son, George Herbert Walker, was the maternal grandfather of George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States.
