Abstract:
Brewing company founded in 1905 in Louisville, Ky. Collection consists of an album of 9 black-and-white photographs that depict a range of promotional activities for Falls City Beer brands. Photographs show radio programming; print and outdoor advertising; billboards, electrical and neon signs and bar displays; packaging designs; paraphernalia including bottle openers, lamps and coasters and other promotional and merchandising materials. Ads depict aspects of the brewing facility, the Falls City ram as well as caricatures of African Americans in the advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Scope and content:

Collection consists of an album of 9 black-and-white photographs that depict a range of promotional activities for Falls City Beer brands. Photographs show radio programming; print and outdoor advertising; billboards, electrical and neon signs and bar displays; packaging designs; paraphernalia including bottle openers, lamps and coasters and other promotional and merchandising materials. Ads depict aspects of the brewing facility, the Falls City ram as well as caricatures of African Americans in the advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Biographical / historical:

Brewing company founded in 1905 in Louisville, Ky. Brewing operations ceased 1919 and production shifted to soft drinks during Prohibition. Brewing resumed 1933 and beer recipe gradually shifted to accommodate national tastes for corporate lagers. Produced Billy Beer 1977-1978 in honor of President Jimmy Carter's brother Billy. Ceased operations 1978. Brand revived in 2010 as a craft brewer.

Acquisition information:
The Falls City Brewing Company photograph album was received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a purchase in 2016.
