Calcutta
- Scope and content:
-
Like the Benares photographs, these images depict an enormous variety of scenes and locations. They were taken from 1979-1980 during a four-month period, and include images shot during the seasonal monsoons. As with Benares, there are sequences devoted to street activity, interiors of palaces and offices, religious processions and festivals; there is also a series on wrestlers and athletes. Of note are images of demonstrations and parades that probably stemmed from political unrest among Muslims during the election year, and more specifically in reaction to Bhutto's hanging in Pakistan in April 1979. The Communist Party of India's symbols are prominent in many images during this period.
