Paris, 1978, 1982

Scope and content:

Photographs in the Paris series were taken during two trips in 1978 and in the summer of 1982. Gedney's primary contacts in Paris were Raghubir Singh, a photographer from India, and his wife Anne; they both appear many times in the proof prints series in particular, but also in a few large prints in this series. As always, Gedney walked the city, photographing people on the streets, in parks, on the Seine's quais, in cafés, and near tourist locations such as the Tour d'Eiffel and the cathedral of Notre Dame, where he took many portraits of gatherings of young people. Long fascinated with museums and their visitors, Gedney shot many images in the Louvre. As part of his interest in crowds, a sequence of images only found among the proof prints was taken at a peace rally in protest of the assassinations of PLO leaders in July 1982. There are a few interior locations such as the residence of the Singhs and of Anne Singh's mother. A few test prints from the Paris work can be found in the Film and Development Tests series.

Prints in this series are arranged in rough chronological order.
