Nudes, 1972-1983 and undated

Scope and content:

Gedney's interest in the human form has its earliest beginnings in his sketches and drawings, found in the Artwork Series; one can also see this interest present in the images of young men in Kentucky, bare to the waist, gathered under trees, on porches, and around cars. Gedney photographed most of his sequences of female nudes during the 1970s and 1980s, chiefly in settings at the Pratt Institute and Cooper Union studios. There are also some male nude studies, taken both early and late in his career; the earlier ones appear to be taken in a personal setting, while others seem to have been taken in a studio setting. There are a few nude male portraits in large print form, but the rest are only available as proof prints or as thumbmail images on contact sheets.

Prints in this series are arranged in rough chronological order.
