Correspondence, 1902-1968

Scope and content:

Mostly letters from Gotham's family and female friends, with many of the latter being evangelical in nature and including items mailed from a Honduran missionary station. A significant amount of correspondence to Gotham from Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans and her family, which documents their close relationship, is in the Correspondence series of the Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans family papers. It dates from about 1938-1941, then is scattered throughout the 1950s-1960s.

Access restricted. Access to this material will be consistent with the 1991 agreement between Duke University Library, James H. Semans, and Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans. Access to any correspondence, legal papers, and financial papers is restricted and will be permitted only with prior written permission, which should be sought from the chair of the board of the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. This restriction shall be in place until 1 January 2027, after which all material shall be considered open for research.
