Scope and content:

The collection consists of a single signed autograph letter with text on one side from Sarah J. Hale to the Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey. Hale thanks Carey for his subscription to her charity, the Seaman's Aid Society and Mariner's House of Boston for the year 1822-1823. Hale also inquires about local interest in a Philadelphia organization that teaches needlework as a means of economic empowerment to poor women.

Biographical / historical:

Sarah Josepha Hale was a 19th century American writer, editor, and philanthropist. She edited the widely circulated women's magazine Godey's Lady's Book for forty years. Hale also founded the Seaman's Aid Society of Boston referenced in this letter. She is also remembered as the author of the nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb, as the individual responsible for making Thanksgiving a national holiday, and as the chief fund raiser for the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston.

Mathew Carey was an Irish-born Philadelphia publisher who started his career in America working in Benjamin Franklin's printing shop. His family publishing firm grew into one of the most prominent in the country. Carey also wrote about economics and history, with a particular interest in naval power.
