Scope and content:

Background notes, transcriptions of original source material, photostats of Spanish archival material (especially related to treasure imports), handwritten and typescript drafts, reprints of articles, and worksheets used to compile prices and wages in Spain from 1351-1800, all related to Hamilton's research for his writings.

Includes a large number of photostats of materials from the Archivo del Banco de España and the Archivo Histórico Nacional concerning the Bank of Spain, as well as notes and source transcriptions of Hamilton's work on this topic. There are additional photostats of archival material from France and other countries, as well as notecards, many of them associated with John Law's research.

Note: Dates provided in the title descriptions for primary source materials reflect the dates of the original items. The production date reflects when the copy or transcription was made. In this last case, some dates were estimated by taking into account the period when Hamilton engaged in each research project.

Processing information:

Includes materials previously arranged into the series Notecards, Oversize Material, and Microfilm. This material has now been arranged under the writing or project for which is was originally used, unless such a determination could not be made, in which case it was placed in Research series.

Arranged into seven subseries by book title or research project, such as those related to Bank of Spain, John Law, and Francisco de Cabarrús. Files within are arranged in original order with original folder titles retained whenever possible.

Related material:

Other materials related to Hamilton's writing process can be found in the Correspondence series, especially in the file "Letters from Spain", as well as in the Research series in the Notecards subseries and the file "Book contracts" in the Subject Files subseries.
