Original Documents, 1584-1829, bulk 1700-1830s
- Scope and content:
-
Hundreds of original documents in Spanish, French, and some in Dutch, primarily dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with additional materials from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The date on these items reflects either their original date of creation or the date referenced within legal documents.
The documents chiefly consist of royal Spanish cédulas outlining Crown economic policy and concern over investments; plans to establish the Bank of Spain; expropriation of Jesuit lands; trade regulation; control of vagabonds; and sumptuary rules for dress. The documents from the 1800s chronicle the French occupation of Spain and the restoration of Fernando VII. Proclamations in the oversize boxes include public declarations about resistance to Napoleon.
