Notes, transcriptions and photostats of primary sources; handwritten and typescript drafts; lectures; and notecards, all related to Hamilton's published and unpublished work on the economic origins of the Monroe Doctrine, South American wars of independence, Colombia, John Law, The Bank of Spain, Spanish price history, and other topics.
Dates provided in the title descriptions for primary source materials reflect the dates of the original documents. The production date reflects when the copy or transcription was made. In some cases, these dates have been estimated based on the period during which Hamilton was engaged in a research project.

This series is composed of materials previously arranged into the series Research Papers, Original Documents, Research Notecards, Additional Unarranged Papers, Microfilm, and Oversize Material. When it was possible to determine the research project to which an item belonged, it was moved to the corresponding subseries within the Writings and Projects series. When such attribution was not possible, items were retained within the Research series.

Arranged into four subseries: Subject Files, Original Documents, Notecards, and Writings by Others. Files are arranged in original order and folders retain original titles whenever possible.
