Desegregation and Redistricting Series, 1959-1975
- Extent:
- 3 boxes
- Scope and content:
-
Houses materials related to the desegregation of the Durham, N.C. city schools, proposed redistricting, and the repeated failed attempts to consolidate the city and county administrative units into a single school district (accomplished in 1992). Formats include memos and internal school board documents, clippings, correspondence from parents, legal files and briefs, study and survey reports, maps, proposals (in both draft and completed form), and a printed booklet. The extensive court files mostly pertain to the NAACP suit of Wheeler, Spaulding, and Thompson v. the Durham City and County School Boards, begun in 1960 and continuing on through 1975; they are of particular interest in documenting the various court mandates and school board proposals for desegregation plans. The later court papers (from 1974 and 1975) contain useful summaries of the process of desegregation, as well as progress reports and statistics gathered by the school board and submitted to the court. Researchers interested in the attempted merger of the city and county schools may wish to consult the files on the bond issues of 1967-1973 in the Subject Files Series, which contain some related materials. Those interested in federal financial support for desegregation may also wish to consult the files on the Emergency School Aid Act of 1972.
